I’ve owned several vehicles that had a warning in the vehicle owner’s manual not to overfill the fuel tank - and to stop filling when the nozzle shuts off.
I had read that for years also but did not pay much attention too it as i didn't know that it could do damage, possibly.

I do this every time i fill. that extra gallon or to is need to make it to the next fuel stop.when towing the rv. three years and i have not had this problem. i wounder if its a 1500 thing and the 2500 is different.
I agree, i have packed my rams fuel cell and fill tube since my first diesel in 96, then in 06, then with the 16, and now with the 20 model and knock on wood i never had a single issue. probably just jinxed mysrlf

The fill tube doesn't hold a significant amount. Even if it held a gallon, you're not gaining much. With diesel what you're likely doing is letting the foam die down then getting more into the tank, as diesel foams much more then gasoline does. If you're pulling the nozzle up to the point you've filled the filler neck and can see liquid, you're eventually going to cause an issue. If you're just letting foam die down, you'll probably be ok. Of course probably =/= certainly.

And I should clarify my early post. I said "every modern vehicle" which is incorrect. Lots of things are vehicles that aren't required to have closed fuel systems and aren't designed to travel on the highway.
I'm guessing it holds about a gallon. I'm also going to add imo, it doesn't seem like today's diesel fuel foams up like the days of old, unless your at the big truck pump, pumping 25 gal. A second

I was pumping gas while in high school back in '72 & '73 and always heard old men tell to top off the tank so I did. I continued to do this until I bought a 2015 Ram 1500 a month or so ago and panicked over 2 warnings came up on the message window. Searched the web and found out that is a big a no-no. So I quit topping the tank off and haven't had it happen again. Lesson learned.

The intended reason for the nozzles to click off once you have filled up is to prevent explosions from static electricity when someone gets out of their car since the nozzles have the triggers that help you fill up your vehicle without keeping your hand on the gazzle nozzle all the time...

But that is how people are ruining the gas nozzles at the stations ... it's not only our trucks but the nozzles filters and senors that go bad because people keep topping off ... I have been reading about this for the last 2 months finding random articles here and there and I am like wtf !

I haven't pumped diesel for about 10 years, so I'll take your word for it. Last diesel I had was a Super Duty with the 7.3 and you could see the foam come up the fuel filler tube. Some stations more, some less.

I have always wondered about catching on fire due to static electricity so before I touch the handle I religiously always touch the metal cab to de spark myself, if that's a word. I've always heard this is a danger but never actually heard or read about it actually happening. I would also add that if its even .0001% chance of that happening with a gasser, that it will be significantly less with diesel fuel due to the flash point difference.

For 3 years I drove 90 miles one way to work. So 180 mi a day which meant that I filled up every other day. I pumped a lot of gas in my 2011 ram 1500 that has over 150,000 miles.

I used to double click until I had to replace the canister on top of the tank. After that one click only, the tank's full it doesn't mess up the EVAP system, I don't have to change that pain in the ass filter and it doesn't make that much a difference in mileage.

So believe what you want it's your truck your money your time I'm one click and that's it

What canister on top of the tank are you talking about ? I might have to do that to mine ...

The best reason for not topping off your tank is that there is a chance that the tank will get so full that fuel will enter the hose of the EVAP system, that hose leads to the Charcoal Canister that is full of charcoal.

Grab a beverage of your choice, some popcorn, take a seat & get a lesson of how the fuel & evap system works.
It is not a Ram that he is working on, but just about all closed systems work the same way

If you ever have to replace your Fuel Pump or Fuel Sensor, this is what you have to do

Yup,

I think I might consider taking the bed off vs dropping the tank. Probably a bit more work but other opportunities for cleaning and maintenance

To me, it's just common sense that you don't fill your tank until the fuel is running on the ground.

It's stamped right on the tank of the Mack Tractor that I drive at work: Fill to 95% capacity.

The same instructions are written in just about every motorcycle owners manual ever.

Dave Ramsey says Common sense has gotten to be so uncommon, It's a marketable commodity.

what a prefect world it would be if we all followed rules. Sarcastic I know, but we literally see a speed limit sign every mile and nobody cares about those. As humans we tend to push the limits, until something goes wrong and we learn the hard way, just my delusional view

The canister might be easy to remove, but at 200-300 for the OEM part, not something I like to tempt!

Once the nozzle clicks off by itself, Im done. The extra little I could possibly get in there wouldnt take my lead foot + V8 engine very far anyway :)

I always fill up past first click. No issues here and she's an 09. I have had the light come on for evap system but it was a simple new gas cap required. They don't last forever.
