The pour point temperature for Pennzoil 0w40 is -51C.
The pour point temperature of your BP\Castrol\Edge is -53C.

BP is an huge international company blending motor oil in foreign countries like Germany & Belgium,
but some of it US made to be marketed in North America, including the USA.

Amsoil SS is surely POA based and at $12\quart, it better be and rated at 15k mile OCI.
BP\castrol\edge, costs $5/quart.

I will most definitely change my Penzoil Ultra Platnum 0w-40 before the 5000 mile mark ( probably more like 4000) and waste money doing it (as some will think). But it makes me feel better so ill pay for that.

I cant be alone. I know im not the only oil change snob

I did amsoil in everything for a good 7 years. It wasn't worth it for me because i was never able to wait 15,000 miles. I would buy the Most expensive stuff and then change it at 7000. I would literally get stressed out over thinking abouy 15,000 mile intervals.
Did your UOA s .ever say you had 8k of life on the Amsoil ?

LOL your not alone Sir , lots of people change their oil before they need to. Nothing wrong imo in keeping good clean fresh oil in your engine

It's your $$ and if it makes you feel better , well that makes it worth every $ $ spent imo...

Will be changing QSUD at 3k miles , since most of the driving conditions was hauling & towing on 6% grade through the so called grapevine know to semi truckers through out the country as severe up & down grade,
which is defined as severe duty by the motor oil folks.

Raven: LOL! Your ego is so huge! You are trying to tell me as well as others that you think you know more then the long time Castrol Employees?

Just because Amsoil has inflated prices on their oils does not mean a company 10X their size who has 12X their buying leverage has to sell their oils for the higher price as well just to show a profit... But with that said--->Bobby has been quoted more then once that Castrol is going after the major Market of M1 0W-40 customers hence the lower price of the German 0W-40... This has been talked about for over a year... With the reformulation of the new GTL M1 0W-40 and the dropping of a certain certification is only helping the sale of the German 0W-40 now...

I would love you to show these fine folks where you found Castrol Edge German 0W-30 for $5 a qt... I have a nice discount at Amazon and I have to pay $8.33 qt

http://www.amazon.com/Castrol-06244...liid=I1DN4D08TPWP3S&ref_=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl

Local autozone stopped stocking it but told me they could order it for $10.37 qt. Not $5...

With the price drop then German 0W-40 is selling for $7.85 qt...

http://www.amazon.com/Castrol-06518...308&sr=1-2&keywords=Castrol+Edge+German+0W-40

I have been only talking about 2 oils here within this thread NOT the whole entire Castrol EDGE line! If Bobby whom has been loyal and Trusting within BITOG community since 2009 as well as a long time Castrol employee shows and tells me information about his companies products I am going to believe him before any other Joe!

I'm done here Gents! Most will be happy im sure! I have seen and heard all I wanted to hear! Good Luck to all those searching and looking for answers within the Oil...

I'm questioning if we read the same post. I didn't read it that way at all. Nor did I detect a hint of ego. Well, this is about the 3rd or 4th "I'm done here" post. Cmon Syn, lighten up.

I for one enjoy syn 's post very much , very informative and backed with lots of research .

I also really enjoy raven3 ' s post , also very informative.
I do wish raven3 would share his sources with links though ?

This forum is great ! This thread is even more ....
I belive the contrasting views and opinions make this thread one of and maybe the best I've had the privilege to READ & take a part in .
I've learned a great deal here , I'm sure many would agree .

So in the spirit of free speech and reading diversified information and being allowed to make your own choices based on all faucets of information within this thread I truly hope syn continues to offer his opinions here !
Syn , has always been not only informative here ( sometimes controversial ) but always states " this is my opinion " and never directs anyone to follow his lead .
Raven3 on the other hand primarily makes statements, informative YES , and I do enjoy his read , especially the MDS info on lifters and such .

Looking forward to reading both syn & raven3 's post in the future !

And this is the kind of attitude i wish we all could apply to every post, myself included. Polite threads are the most productive. Even if there is arguments, as long as they a civilized everything is much more informative.

It is a forum of people that like Rams. No need to feel attacked when someone responds. You can't read tone of voice in a post!

nobody feels attacked. just have seen some arguments go pretty far off into left field derailing a thread that started out very informative.

thats all im sayin.
just a general comment really.

you are right though. tone of voice and emotion is kinda hard to read in a post a lot of times.

Have some more info on the Castrol 0w40 thing.
As far as posting links go, I do not post links, you guys can do your own research.
Anyway, looking at the Castrol site under the USA tab
0w40 is not listed as a grade available with the Edge label, only 5w40.
However, if the product data tab is selected under the Edge product description
There is a 0w40, A3, professional, Euro, listed with product specification data.
Now if the MSDS tab is selected under Edge product description
There two 0w40 grades listed
1. 10w40, product code 463998, dated 4-12-16
2. 10w40 A3\B4 , product code 467465, dated 12-14-15
There is an inconsistentency in the data presentation and is confusing.
The MSDS data sheet for 10w40 lists, 50%-75% pentadecane, hydrogenated & 10%-25% highly refined base stock
Castrol has a foot note Indicating exact concentrations are not specified, since the exact % is proprietary & also variations in product tolerances.
Pentadecane is a slack parrifin wax derived from distillate with chemical formula C15-H32, which is an alkane hydrocarbon.
If you have a "fuels and lubricant handbook" , pentadecane description and specs can be found on page 532.
This stuff is not polyalphaoletin(POA), Diaalkylbenene, Dibasic acid ester(diester), or monobasic acid ester(polyester),
It is "liquid engineering".

Found some 0w40 on Amazon priced at $23\ 5 quarts, which is < $5\quart

Wow, that's some deep drilling on the oil stuff but don't know why Syn got upset, he tried and dumped his euro 0-30 cause it was not doing well with his mds. So who really cares what its made of? As for me I just changed back to the oil weight recommended by Ram 5-20 weight only in Amsoil Signature Series and I must say this is good oil, it is doing well it did not get rid of my light tap till warm but neither has any of the other 7 oils in 5-20 and 5-30 I have tried, it did lessen its sound a little. But here are a few things it has done. No fast tick so far but imo fast ticks are oil filter related not oil type. Its caused by the anti drain back valve leaking or not sealing on occasion. My start ups sound as good as with any of the 30w's I tried and better than all other 20w's I used, my truck w 30 would start and hang at 1200 rpm for a good 30-50 seconds before starting to decline taking several minutes to reach 6-700 rpm it normal idle but now it dropped much faster don't know why but I like that. Oil pressure is the same within 1 pound less on hot idle 36 same 53 at 60 mph runs very quite and smooth when hot and seems to accelerate better but it could just be new oil syndrome effect. I checked the previous oil which was PP 5-30 with 15oz of lubeguard on the highway after running 80 or so a little no load on truck and oil reached 222 degrees water was 208, will check the amsoil at same conditions and report back. So far if everything stays like it is this will end my oil quest. I love Syns posts and hopes he stays we disagree on things but its been no big deal Example being Syn believes the 5.7 hemi required 5-20 oil was done for one thing only, café mpg ratings. My research leads me believe the 5.7 hemi was designated to use 5-20 for more than just café mpg ratings. Millions are spent developing these motors that Ram has to stand behind and the fuel and oil that will work best for its design is a integral part of that from the start. I agree using a lower viscosity can boost mpg but to choose to do that without changing things to accommodate for it to maintain its longevity I think would be a big mistake no multi billion dollar companies like Chrysler, ford, Honda, suburu and countless others who mandate 5-20 oil would risk.

Just an update to my 2015 Laramie Hemi. I switched to a blend of 5 quarts Pennsoil Platinum and 2 quarts of Pennzoil conventional that I had leftover from my first oil change. The engine was ticking slightly on 100% dino oil and is still doing it. Sometimes worse and sometimes a little loud but usually goes away or gets very quiet after driving it. I'm not going to worry about it, it's the nature of this engine. I love the power and am constantly amazed how smoothly for an OHV engine it can run up to redline.

From day one I like the way Raven thinks, no loyalty to any brand just the science. Said as much many times, the one guy here that thinks like me. But to be honest, he makes a bunch of assumptions. For example, this product uses viscosity improvers and may even guess at which one, but nobody can know that is what is going on within that oil formula because as any oil guy who reads all of the white papers, these formulas are as closely guarded as the Coke-a-Cola recipe. They are very educated guesses which I respect, but a guess does not a fact make. Syn should just point out the fallacy of the argument and move it along. Nobody is perfect, I have made mistakes in this thread as well. Lets not ruin it because we disagree. There can still be valuable info to be had as more UOA's tell more of the story. Syn's contributions are second to none as well, he is the only one who scored a bunch of us free oil and UOA's. Stick around Syn. I got work to get back too, roofing my new chicken coop. I had no idea roofing was this involved.

We all make assumptions here. Ravens just have a little more education behind them.

To really think about it, no one has proven anything here besides how oil choice relates to a specific noise.

Syn always says, "don't go what I do" yet falls apart when others question it. So be it I guess

Just an update if anyone is interested .
Some of you know I've poured in 5W -20 PYB for a flush prior to going back to Redline for another UOA .
Fwiw , the PYB 20wt is performing well , maybe due to Redlines moly still impregnated into the microscopic scores and scratches from normal wear ?
Nevertheless the PYB 20wt sounds and feels good , no noticable mpg or power gains with the PYB . I've got approximately 300 miles on it now .
I'll be pouring in Redline soon and running another UOA on the Redline in late November in hopes to achieve improved # of iron and such from my last 5W-30 RL uoa , which was fantastic imo and was good for 10,000 miles !
