I'm very sorry to hear this OP :(

Ironically I had something similar happen to my 2002 Grand Cherokee Overland 4.7H.O. I was under cruise, hit the brakes harder than usual to slow down for a stop sign approaching (winter time) and the jeep instantly started stumbling. The CEL came on immediately and it ran rough all the way home. I got home, read the codes and it was a missfire. Long story short, one of of the valves dropped in the head causing 0 compression in cyl. #7. Since parts were basically nowhere to be found for the H.O. 4.7 I ended up trading in the Jeep.

I was doing about 105 km/hr prior to braking. Was my valve problem related to aggressive braking??? Who knows. Its just a story and I thought I'd share. I miss that Jeep.

I keep second guessing myself and just checked again on the maintenance schedule. The only thing I haven't done up to date is change the spark plugs. Hoping the 2'nd mechanic will pull a rabbit out of his hat and find something the first guy missed. If not, I guess the kids are getting a new engine for Christmas, LOL.

I had a similar (sort of) incident....I was rear ended. Drove away later on and about 30 mins later, engine starts chugging and farting.... would restart but was just chugging hard. I could smell gas too. Ended up being a cracked valve spring on cylinder 1. After the diagnostics etc, it was about two grand. Previous to that never had any issues.

BTW it's a 2014 Hemi, and at that time had about 126K on the odometer. Ran perfectly before that, ans has ran perfectly ever since.

I would think if it was the plugs, you would have some warning, ie. Rough running, lower mpg ECT...

2'nd mechanic confirmed something is "hammering" in the bottom end. Used engine going in tomorrow. 2014 with 11,000 miles. $3,700 installed. Could be worse.

$3,700 is hard to swallow, but it sounds like a decent deal for a relatively barely worn in engine. Good luck and let us know how she runs once she's repaired.

Will they open up the bottom and tell you what's down there after they pulled it?

Wow this is horrible! I dunno that I've read of many/any issues with Hemi 5.7 bottom ends? So curious to know what it could be.

I'm not sure what I'd do in this situation having to put ~$4K into a ~5yr/old truck. Me, I'd probably try to finagle a trade in as-is. Obviously you're not going to get a great trade-in allowance, but it *might* be worth a shot. This shouldn't happen to a well maintained 5yr/old truck with not that many miles on it. That's the card I'd play with a Ram dealer.

I owe way too much to move it. Ended up finding a slightly cheaper engine. $3045 installed.

No rabbits I guess. Did anyone venture a guess as to what happened ?
