Nothing wrong with down shifting to save the brakes. On a long decline it's pretty easy to warp your rotors if you don't.

I like mine. Took about 2 days to get use to. Like others have stated, I don’t care for the shift buttons on the steering wheel but then again it’s not built to be raced on a road course and it works just fine for the straight line drag race guys so it’s whatever.

This right here, downshifting to slow down is something that manual transmission owners have done to save brakes since the beginning of time, no damage is caused buy it.

Indeed. I got 60K miles on the factory brakes on my 2013 Challenger, primarily because I only use the brakes for STOPPING. When slowing down on off-ramps, down-hills, approaching intersections, bends on country roads, etc..I exclusively use the next lower gear. And especially at highway speeds. Nothing heats up rotors like applying brakes when your at 80 MPH and need to slow down for the left-lane-lurker blocking the passing lane. I just pop the cruise control off, grab a gear, and never touch the brake.

My Rebel has this wasted space in the center of the console, where a console shifter should be. I have sunglasses in the little tray below the HVAC controls, but everything else I keep in the truck is in one of the other SIX covered, enclosed storage compartments. My center console open-pit is empty. If someone would make a manual shifter that would pop into that space and connect into the transmission controls, they'd sell a million of them. My Challenger has parallel A/T shifter controls (Stick and paddles). There's no reason there couldn't be a manual stick that's in parallel with the steering wheel gear controls on these RAM trucks.

No damage is caused, BUT it is putting wear on the clutch, tranny gears.... Do you want to replace brake pads, or a clutch / gears?

I'm not saying don't or you should not do it, I do it all the time on my 6 speed Mini Cooper. I'm just saying don't fool yourself intoi believing your saving anything, your not.

I don't mind. Weird getting used to at first, but it is what it is. For a few months, right after I bought the RAM, I had the RAM with a dial shift, a PT Cruiser with a floor shift, a Dakota with a column shift, and a Grand Caravan with an upper console shift. All Chryslers, and all automatics. I would always reach for the wrong stick (or dial), no matter which vehicle I was in.... :D

I have not totally got used to it. had mine 3 months now. I would rather have the floor shifter on the center console like in the Tundra or Ford. they are probably all going to this in that the transmission is actually not shifted by an actual lever anymore. I know the floor shifters are fake and just move a switch anyway but I am slow to accept new stuff.

I’m OK with it. Whenever I get nostalgic for a “real” shifter I just take my 20 year old Wrangler for a drive.

What does bother me is the orange light. This is the first vehicle I’ve ever driven (35 years of driving) where an orange light isn’t a bad thing. Make it green or blue or white or just about anything other than orange (or red). I twitch every time I see that orange light.

As soon as I figger out how to put a proper console shifter in that gaping hole in my console, I'm going to convert that shifter knob to a master volume control so that no matter how loud the UConnect decides to change the volume to, I can cap it at the output.

I remember my 70 Challenger R/T with a very bright amber light mounted on the lower dash in close proximity to the pistol grip shifter. Four speeds were left and up for reverse and there was apparently some concern about full throttle launches in reverse instead of first. (Yes, we had idiots back then too).reverse warning light.jpg

I don't mind it so much, but my wife's Jeep and my Charger have center
column shifters so I never really get used to it...

Went from a colum shifter on my 2014 silverado to the knob. Took about a day to get used to it and i have no issues with it. It works as intended. I honestly think people are just overthinking things here

I just got my first Ram with it as my '13 was still the 6-speed. I liked being able to rest my hand on the shifter but I could care less about the dial. I will say I don't understand how anyone can confuse it with the volume knob. It much larger and it notches into each gear. I do like the extra space in the console that was taken up by the large shifter before.

I don't mind the shifter knob.
BUT hate the 4WD buttons, a knob like on the older trucks or even the 2500 is so much better for shifting into 4wd on the fly.
The button is A. too hard to find at speed B. Requires to long of a push to decide that me pushing the stupid button really means I want to be in 4 wd. C. requires me to look down to make sure it understood what my pushing on the button really meant and that it is in 4 WD.

Knob is a simple, reach - find knob - one click - bam in 4 WD.
