Ran my 09 5.7 liter ram 1500 out of fuel today put probably close to 30 liters back in but now it wont start. I've ran it out of gas before and it fired right up as soon as I put gas in? Any ideas?

Why do you run your truck out of fuel? Does the gauge not work properly? Not a good idea to do that regularly because you suck all and any dirt and sediment from the bottom of the tank up into your fuel system. That could be your problem.

If the pump is engaging, need to check pressure at the rail. If pressure is there next step would be electrical.

I have heard the fuel pump in your gas tank needs fuel on it to keep it cool. If you often run it really low it may have caused pump to over heat and prematurely wear out. Plus if tank is completely empty it's will run constantly without cooling off

I slightly recall that there is a way to Prime the Fuel Pump

You will need to check, before trying anything

But it may be something like key on for x amount of time, key off key on for x amount of time, for something like 5 times

found more, that was diesel engine when changing fuel filter

First question........are you 100% sure it ran out of fuel versus the fuel pump just died? The next question is how long, or how many times, did you try to start it? Generally a gas engine will start back up pretty quickly but if you just cranked it once it may simply need to prime back up. I would turn the key on (but not crank it) for about 15 seconds, then turn it back off and then on again for 15 seconds, and repeat that maybe 4-5 times to let the pump run and try to get fuel to the engine, then try to start it. If that doesn't work and the engine still won't start I would suspect the fuel pump died or it might have sucked up any debris and dirt that was sitting at the bottom of the tank and plugged something up.

There is a fuel pump relay located under the fuse panel by the battery, this unit is called the TIPM, total integrated power module, you need to rent or purchase a fuel pressure gauge and connect it to the fuel rail by the fuel injectors, do what 62Blazer said and see if you have pressure about 30-40 psi, you may have smoked the relay or fuel pump, there is a bypass cable you can install in the TIPM to bypass the relay these guys make that cable, contact them and they can help you.

probably ruined the fuel pump. If you have run out more than a couple of times it is dead. You may 'hear' it running but chances are it is not pumping anything, that is why you NEVER let yourself run out of fuel. Why do you think they put warning lights and alarms on most modern vehicles? Time to have a new pump installed and do NOT run out of fuel any more. Good luck, cheers.

A very close friend told me many years ago the it just as much to keep the top half full as the bottom half.
Made good sense then and even more now with electric in-tank pumps needing fuel to cool them.

If it has a fuel filter it could be plugged from the pump sucking gas from the empty tank.

This is exactly why I never let any vehicle I own run out of gas, ever. Not the boat, cars, truck, motorcycle, ATV. Only lawn mowers at the end of the season.

That company that makes the jumpers, also points out the Fuel Fuse & Relay

Those 2 items need to be checked first
