I've got a 2014 RAM 1500 Sport with 120,000 miles. I am wondering if I should consider replacing my starter motor before it lets me down in an inconvient place. Would appreciate some information on how long your Hemi Starter Motor lasted before you had to replace it. :(

Thanx .... Dan

Moved to appropriate forum.

Not sure I understand this mentality. Why are you focusing on the starter? Lots of things can and do wear out. Alternator, water pump, power steering pump, what about the engine itself, or the transmission? I mean, where do you draw the line? I wouldn't worry about it unless your starter is showing signs of being on the way out. They will often give you some warning before going out completely. And they can be "limped" along with a well placed hammer blow in many cases. It sucks to be stranded somewhere when a part fails. It's just part of owning and driving an older vehicle.

So let me ask the question another way. How many of you, with 10 yo or older RAMs with Hemis, have replaced your starter motor?

In searching through the 4th gen forum (something I strongly suggest everyone does when they have the urge to ask a question like this) I found a few threads where people were having issues with their starter. But they all seemed to give some advance warning that the starter was on it's way out. I didn't do an extensive search, but in the few threads I scanned through I didn't see any instances where the owner was stranded by it. I mean, who am I to judge if someone wants to pro-actively replace something like a starter. Another thing to consider is that aftermarket starters are often rebuilt units. Which tend to not last as long as an original part might last. It'd be a shame to replace a perfectly functioning part with one that lasts a year or two.

OEM starters and alternators seem to have gotten better as the years go on. I have replaced less and less. My 1992 Chevy, went thru 1 starter and 2 alternators in its 27-year 260K life before I got rid of it. My 1998, 2007, 2010 and 2016 are all on the originals. 3 out of 4 in the 250K range. I have always chosen to have mine locally rebuilt or a rebuilt unit from north America before a "new" Chinesium unit. Same with body parts. I would rather get used OEM from a boneyard than an "new" Chinesium. I know how the OEM were tested.

My starter left me stranded at 50k miles on 2 year old truck. I was away for work 4 hours from home. Is what it is. Battery also went dead around that time.

04. 5.7. 417826. Same starter & alternator. Yes four hundred thousand miles. I replace the battery anytime it gives one slow crank. Got 5yrs on oe batt. 5yrs on 1st red top . 10yrs on 2nd red top. On 3rd red top now. I try to keep all conections clean & tight. Yes a fine percussion tool will usually sway a bad starter to work. And you can get home. OE is always better

In every truck I have owned , now that is 7. Within a year I will change the starter alternator, battery for sure. on my 2014 now I changed it with in a year, that was 2019 , i am the second owner, and it was on the way out

Is that related to the sea breeze from the North Atlantic?
