While there are many posts regarding disabling the MDS due to droning. I have not seen any discussions on wear and tear on the 4 cylinders doing all the heavy lifting. Any thoughts or not really an issue?

I've thought about this too, and have no idea. Would be interesting to see compression test results on a high mileage MDS engine.

Surfing around I found this article and it included the quote,
"Chrysler engineer Cole wrote: "The modern Hemi always shuts off the same four cylinders. In our durability test cycle (150,000 customer equivalent miles driven at the 95th percentile, meaning that only 5% of our owners are more abusive than our testing), we have not found any adverse wear patterns." Even in 2013, eight years later, there have been no reports of problematic uneven wear."

The new Dodge Hemi V8 engine in full detail - 5.7, SRT8 6.1, and 392 6.4

Was wanting to post this same question for a while now as it has been on my mind too since getting my new 13 Ram this past September. Still not a fan of MDS and am thinking of disabling it too.

The only thing that the mds disables is the valves and injectors, the rotating assembly it's always moving and compressing/decompressing the same air. If you think about it, the mds cylinders should actually see less wear since they don't have the combustion in the chambers as much. Now, having taken both types of mds engines apart (vvt and non-vvt) there it's no difference between the cylinders that I have seen. The lubricating system is always working so the rotating system will be fine.

There have been some question about the MDS causing wear and tear on the cam chain tentioner on the Challenger forum in the 5.7 cars. I've never heard that about the trucks though..

I don't want to be chicken little about it. I've never seen the issue in any Ram truck forum anywhere so maybe it's a car thing only.

Search any Challenger forum... you'll see it. Take it with a grain of salt....

After 2 full tanks of gas and running in manual mode I see next to zero difference in mileage as compared with MDS on. I'm doing close to the same drive routine weekly which is approx 60/40 (city/hwy) with 89 octane. That's not why I shut off MDS for though, the drone is why I'd rather be in manual mode. It comes on at a very used in-town speed and RPM number. Wonder if I could have the dealership disable it?

Given that it's isolated almost solely to the challengers would play against the MDS theory. It's not an issue on the chargers, 300, trucks, durango, or jeep, and the engines are the same. The difference is the drivetrain and tuning.

Probably right. I've never seen it an issue anywhere else. Challenger owners are finicky....lmao

I tested it on a drive from Toronto to Edmonton. I actually saw a slight increase in mileage by shutting it off.

I can't see how an engine can be more efficient firing on 4 cylinders but turning 8 than it is running on all 8.

Based on the replies it sounds promising that there's no uneven wear running MDS. However if what I read is true regarding Tow Mode on the 2013s, it appears the MDS is not completely disabled while towing? If this is true I would not want to be towing a 10,000 pound trailer even for a fraction of a second on 4 cylinders.....

Forgetting the MDS issue, these trucks weren't really made to haul anything but your butt anyway. I agree though. MDS is stupid and I usually turn mine off with the tuner. Which I'm still not sure fully disables it or not.

And I'm definitely not doing it on 4 cylinders!
