I just bought a 2018 2500 crew cab long bed 4x4 with 4:10’s

My wife has her eye on a 5th wheel Toyhauler that is 10,500 empty.

Anyone towing anything this heavy?
How does it do?

I will be within ratings just wondering if it’s realistic.

Should tow with ease, especially being a 5th wheel. My boat weighed about 14k and towed great.

What kind of boat weighs 14k lol.

Back on topic.I pulled 10-14 regular with my 5,7. 230 k miles. I'm under gvwr now with 6.4 4.10 and don't foresee it having any problems

I tow my 5th wheel which is 13k dry, probably 14k loaded. It tows good. Not diesel good, but it gets it moving and keeps speed relatively easily on flat ground. I have the 4.10s as well. In coastal Georgia and north Florida it towed great.

I just moved back home to WV though so I'm saving up to regear my 6.4 as the hills here are pretty constant.

I pull a gooseneck toyhauler and went across the scales at 23,160. It does pretty good on flat ground, and low elevation, but struggles as the hills and elevation get greater. This trailer was not in the picture when I bought this truck. I will be going back to a Cummins.

On Edit: I am not bashing. Well, maybe the 66RFE LOL. But for a small-block gasser the 6.4 is a hoss. I really need the diesel for this load, especially for the exhaust brake. On steep grades the engine braking is pretty much ineffective against 16K pushing you along. I don't like dragging the service brakes too much.

I have same truck. 6 pack, long bed,
4x4 , 6.4 has W/4.10.
You can pull about 15 k w / 6.4 gas
But your not going to like it.
If gone pull this trailer lot miles for lot
Years. I Think you should look at trailer
Your full load ( food water camp suff)
Is about is about 8000 lbs max .

If you do keep about 8000 or less
You be able drive/tow well over 100 k
Trouble free, Willie

Dad had something similar, years ago, and he used a single axle semi tractor.
Course, When Dad steps into the throttle, he wants it to move, regardless of grade.

I currently have a 7500lb trailervsnd jidt sold a Ram 1500 that pulled it with ease.

I understand not maxing out the truck but only useing half of it’s capacity is silly.

I have a 2018 6.4 crew cab, 6 1/2 box and 4:10 gears. We have a 5th wheel that weighs 11,000# dry. The trucks pulls it well the only concern I have is it’s shifting from 1st to 2nd in tow mode. It seems have a hesitation or it doubles shifts. Since it’s the first year we are towing this new 5th wheel, not sure if this is normal or not.

I doubt he gets 2 MPG....lol. I have a 2006 Crownline 250CR (25') that weighs about 7500lbs as it sits in the water and I might be lucky to get 2 MPG and I have a stock 260 hp 5.7

It's a 37 Active Thunder. Had small power (425hp 496 mag ho). It ran 75mph. At cruise speed(47mph) it only ran 3300rpm and would get around 2mpg. At WFO, it was 1 at best

I wish more people would just take the time One time at the scales to get proper set up. Set WDH and loading to Replace unloaded steer axle weight and set the tongue weight in range and they will safely & comfortably tow to the rated max tow if again she is set to have all specs within Mfgr limits IE max axles, receiver, gcvwr.

Yeah I cringe when I see a poorly set up rig go down the road. I used to drive tractor trailer & loved how I could get a ticket for a marker light out, while a guy with his camper goes buy in a V shape cause he is over his hitch weight by a 1,000.

No question that big boy is heavy. Look at that rear end squat. Wow.

Are you running a wdh? If so what brand? If your not you really should be. At 14k lbs, and figuring 12% tongue weight that's 1680 lbs. Your truck should have a payload capacity of 3k like mine so I wonder why its squatted so hard even if/with no wdh.

Because when the front of the truck is raised a few inches (headlights in the trees) raised clearance in the wheel well the drive axle is also carrying several hundred pounds of that weight as the drive axle becomes a teter totter fulcrum IE worse than squat as it’s carrying tongue & bed and some motor/cab steer axle weight. It can also steer squirrelly and with a raised center of gravity be roll prone should you have to swerve around someone who pulls into your path. (In this case that is minimized by length of truck n trailer.)

This is how you see so many TT accidents where the truck & or trailer end up backwards & upside down in the ditch. One guys tows safe & stable at max tow rating the next guy with the same truck towing 3/4 the weight struggles to keep it straight and in his lane then accordions & sways when a semi passes him. (Light on steer axle over on drive axle, over on receiver, too much or too little on tongue weight etc)

Yet many TT forums parrots want to warn you to watch your payload sticker and stack up weight estimates towards that number but have no idea what is needed for a stable set up. It’s like stand on the balls of your feet & spread your legs and you can probably take a punch. But put your ankles together and put your weight on your heels and a 9 yo girl can probably knock you on your butt. Same concept.

GsRam I’m not sure if there is a WDH for that type frame (boat trailer) but it only needs to be loaded to 10 percent tongue weight which normally is not hard to do with the boat engine/s behind the boat trailer axles.

Boats typically have lighter tongue weight due to most of the weight being in the back of the boat. I know my boat/trailer combo at about 9000-9500lbs barely squatted my 1500 and doesn't budge my 2500
