So haven't had any replies on my previous post about having trans issues.. Just wondering if I do swap to a used transmission, What years 545rfe will work in my 2003? is there different wiring on the newer ones? Should I just look for a 03 trans?
Thanks

Hey. Just saw your post and it sucks no one has responded yet. I'll see if I can provide some RFE insight. So here goes...

45RFE and 545RFE are exactly the same transmission. The only thing that makes the 545RFE a 5-speed unit is the software in the PCM/TCM. In the 45RFE 4th gear is utilized by applying the OD Clutch and the 4C Clutch. With a new software change for the 2003 RAM trucks Chrysler was able to give us a 5th gear by applying the OD Clutch and the 2C Clutch thus giving us a 0.67:1 ratio.

For the 2012 MY, Chrysler decided to start calling the RFE a 6-speed hence the 65RFE. This transmission is identical to the 45RFE and the 545RFE except for a revised torque converter.

So, when it comes to shopping for a unit there are plenty of them out there that are available. If you can snag one from a 2012-2014 Ram 1500 you will get the revised torque converter. Happy Transmission Hunting.

So the 68RFE will work in an 04 without any programing? I know 2014 have a 8 speed tans option. I am sure that one won't be plug and play.

The 66RFE and the 68RFE is entirely different. The 65RFE is tht same trans as the 45/545 but with a different converter.

my 545RFE seems pretty good for now.. I know there's a little rough shift from 3 to 4th. So I know it's just a matter of time with 230,000 miles on it. I am first owner and always done fluid change at about 60,000 miles.. I'll have to keep an eye out for 65RFE.
