Not sure what the question is but your general premise is a good one.

If you don't want to spend a bunch more money on the truck to get it runnin', pass on it and find one that does run.

Is it worth buying? You did not say how much you were paying for the vehicle, also do you have the tools and time. Its all relative to your situation. If you have the time tools and heads to do it go for it.

I say this because I paid $5k for myn and found out right after I bought it why it was so cheap. The previous owner had put stop leak in the radiator because the head gaskets were blown. I found a set of loaded heads at my father in-laws junk yard and swapped them out in a weekend. I also paid nothing for the heads or machining on them.

He's asking $1,200 but I'm sure friend price is around $800-900...lol...but I don't want to end up putting a bunch of money into it when with that money I could have just bought a decent pick-up that need nothing. I'm just trying to figure out what's the better option in my situation.

The better option would be a running truck that needs only a little work.

It's hard to say whether this truck is it or not. We can't see it, can't drive it, can't put our hands on it. You'll just have to determine it's condition and what it's worth to you.

As far as I am concerned, I'd not buy a 4.7L truck. It's underpowered for the size of the vehicle and the 4.7L engine is notorious for oiling issues.

I have to agree with MADDOG I wish I could have afforded a Cummins truck. The one I have does what I need but I often times have to tow an excavator and have to borrow my neighbors 2500 to do it.
