I am having a major issue with condensate build up in my rear diff. I have had to change my gear oil 4 times and only have 100K miles on the truck. At 20 bucks a quart it is killing me. The rearend will start howling like a pack of wolves, when i remove the cover to drain fluid it is tan in color and full of water. While on the lift in my shop last night I noticed every surface that above the fluid level had drops of condensate on it. I have had it back to the dealer several times for the irratating whine hopeing they would just replace it under the lifetime warrantee but they say it is normal noise. I don't think so! Any help in figuring out where this water is coming from would be great.

I'm assuming you haven't been launching a boat or wading thru water with the truck, right?

Also assuming there is no oil leaking (bad seals that let oil out could also let water in under the right circumstances).

I would check that the vent tubing is in tact, not plugged, and run correctly.

After that, I have no ideas. LOL

Only thing I can think off of the top of my head is the breather hose that is attached to the diffs.

Is there a hole on the diff that is open? Look for a flexible rubber hose with a little plastic cap on the top of it that can spin/move around. Maybe that is gone or something punctured the line.

My front one is routed up through my engine by my battery and the rear diff is tucked up under my bed, can't remember where exactly.

No boat ramps, well none that i am aware of my 18 year old does drive it from time to time. I have checked all the vent tubing and it seems to be intact. After all this time she is still just as clean underneath as the day we bought her. Got me baffled. No leaks.... nothing.

Is this the front or rear diff on the truck?

Using premade gasket or a tube to form the gasket?

Diffs generally get pretty warm when they run. If properly vented, any condensation should be vaporing right off and out of it. Problem has to be related to the vent system if the truck isn't being submerged or leaking.

my 18 year old does drive it from time to time.

Enough Said! Ask the boy where he's been swamping the truck.

I bet there is a nice river crossing or two between here and the local make out spot.

I love my kids, but they do the damndest things and don't fess up to it.

NO WAY water should be in there without playing submarine. As stated before, any little condensation will cook right off (they get pretty warm rolling along) and if it's not leaking out without leaving a puddle, there is no way a puddle is seeping in without some outside "assistance".

BTW, I also own a '07 1500 5.7 QC 4x4 and I have off roaded, forded streams up over the hubs and launched my boat on shallow angle ramps with the exhaust bubbling water numerous times, and at almost 100k miles, mine is still quiet and has a tight LSD. The cover has never even been cracked open on it since the factory put it in there.

Something "Fishy" is going on... :shakehead:

No Doubt!

Let's just hope for the trouble, the diff fluid isn't the only thing he's going out and getting wet! :boxed:

Time to have "The Talk" with the boys there Je2rider; About keeping your powder, your ****** and your diff fluid dry until you are big enough to deal with the consequences that often result from such foolishness.... also known as life, and growing up.

As for Je2rider, with Three of them coming up, all I can say is; :893MrT-thumb:

Everyone's rear end, including the truck's, should be kept dry during these excursions!
