For the last few years I keep having this problem in the winter. When the truck is running the gear shift seems to get stuck in park. I can hear the release when I step on the brake pedal, but it won't shift out of park. I have to wait sometimes up to 10 minutes before it will shift out of park. One thing that I have noticed recently is that I can hear a click (similar to the click you hear when you step on the brake) and then it will let me shift out of park. Has anyone else had this problem and what ended up being the solution. I've been told that it could be the shift linkage, but with the random click that I am hearing I'm thinking that my problem might be more of an electronic issue.

That "click" your hearing is probably the shift release when you step on the brake. Does hearing that click coincide when you can shift out of park?

Check the drivers side of the transmission where the shift selector thing is, on my 03 somehow the bolt that held it on wiggled loose over the years and I would have to slam it forward to get it to engage in park, and then I would have to wiggle and fight it to get it out of park. Turns out there was enough slop in it that it couldnt quite reach the right position. Might be as simple as a loose bolt.
