Before just replacing parts, have someone turn the steering wheel side to side while you check every joint in the front end.
Slack/play in any of the steering joints, as well as worn pan hard/track bar bushings can cause a "wandering" feeling in the steering.

If all that checks out, and you determine that the slack is in fact in the steering box, you might be able to adjust it.

Oh, don't forget to check the steering shaft under the hood as well (from the steering wheel to the box) .

There is a joint at the base of the column before it goes through the firewall, basically above the brake pedal. It is built with a rubber liner that allows for movement of the steering wheel to isolate it a bit. As it ages it gets sloppy. I thought I was going to have to replace a bunch of steering components, but instead ws able to fix my lose steering by putting some plastic spacers from the hardware store in the joint for about one dollar. It takes up the space around the joint and makes it so your steering doesn't wander. There is a company that sells little aluminum spacers for $10, but they plastic spacers worked for me as "proof of concept", I may purchase the aluminum ones as a more permanent solution. I have 185k miles on my 2500.

Just order the Rough Country brace for $140 or so. Easy to install. Very happy with mine. Made a difference tightening up the front end (really feel the difference when going over railroad tracks).
