I have a 2012 ram 4.7 that I am replacing the motor in I have a used one so I am refreshing it before I install it. I am having a issue getting a new lower timing chain tensioner first I got after market installed and it had no where near enough tension as the OEM one. So I ordered a mopar one from rockauto and same thing...... not enough tension you can see in my pictures below the old one has more of a Bow to it and more space unloaded I have No slop with old one installed am I missing something here?

I have had several issues with this over the last year. What I have ended up doing is removing the plastic guide and bending/massaging the spring steel backing to give it enough tension against the chain.

I just wanted to make sure that I am not missing something here lol. I will do that if I have to or use the old one I just figured a Mopar part... would be a direct fit no bs I guess its hard to get good parts these days.

Yeah you're not missing anything. Over about the last six months I have been using Cloyes timing parts for the 4.7 and have had really good luck with the lower timing chain tensioner. My local O'reilly's keeps the Cloyes & Melling 4.7 timing parts in stock. Hit up the local O'reilly's and go see one for yourself and see if it's any better than your current part.

I'm surprised the Cloyes gave you problems. The Melling has always been good for me too.

Is there a difference between the 4.7L manufacturing years wise. I believe one was a H.O. and the other one was not maybe that's a difference?

I order what it says for the truck but out of all of the 4.7s I have worked on I have never had this issue lol. I don't think there is any diff with the lower chain between years. Even if there was the tensioners I got would still put no tension on anything they simply don't work I hope the new one works should be here today its holding me up.

There is no difference between the tensioners year to year for the Cloyes or the Melling. They use the same part number.

The Mopar tensioner is the same part number for 1999-2014 as well.
