Last Saturday, I blew my 6.7 Cummins, according to a Ram Dealer my Turbo blew and pieces went down through the combustion chamber and took out the compression on 2 cylinders. They also said it could have happened just the opposite. I have 125,000 miles on my Cummins.. Dealer wanted 30,000.00 to replace, but I’m wondering .. Do you think the motor can be fixed instead of replaced? Looking for suggestion’s.. Love my 2500 Ram HD ..

You will not know until you either bore scope those cylinders or pull the head and see just how bad things really are, I suggest finding a local diesel shop for second opinion...

I'd like to hear their explanation on how a "turbo blowing" had sent pieces through an intercooler and all the tubing, plus through the grid heater and into the combustion chamber.?
I'd be suspicious and would want to see the damaged turbo and cylinder bores and head.
It's far more believable the grid heater bolt melted than the turbo getting into the cylinders.
Just my opinion.

30K? Wow! Yeah, definitely get some other opinions and quotes. You might start by just getting a quote to do some exploring and then make a decision how to proceed.

Just a state away in Ohio, replace stock engine under 9k for the engine, you send the core.

Remaned turbo probably under 2k grand,

Check local diesel mechanics on install. If you can get someone to do it for 4g's that is half price. While the transmission is out I would put all the upgrades in that rfe valve body.

In line with this place on costs.

I would definitely get a second opinion, $30k is insane. Any modifications to the truck? Pretty rare for a turbo to "blow" like that.

I REALLY want to hear the answer to this question!

OP - Who is the dealer and the name of the person who told you what you posted?

It’s not unheard of. Turbo impeller self destructing, though rare with stock Cummins turbos, does happen on occasion.

Get too much shaft play on that turbo and boom she goes. Definitely possible to get metal shavings into the rest of the engine and take out a cylinder or two. Usually seen at higher mileage on semis... 125k miles isn't very high for a diesel.

It's not going to be cheap but you can definitely get it fixed cheaper than that. They basically took the easy way out and quoted you a complete (reman) drop in engine as opposed to a repair/short block + parts etc.

There is good news in that invoice, you see the discrepancy is in the cost of parts not labor. You can solve the issue on cost, you just can't do it at the dealer. That price alone really tells you they don't want the job. Did you even ask if their parts is for a brand new engine or a reman? My guess it is even worse then the number, my guess that is for a reman, which could be wrong, but I'd at least find out and ask if there is an option for a reman if it isnt one. Find a local guy who warrants his work including labor for some miles, doesnt really matter how many miles even if it is only 6 mos on the labor, see if it is possible. If you can get a 6 mos warranty on labor and 36 or whatever on the engine, I'd go that route.

I wouldnt let anybody see that invoice, might influence the price they give you. Let them see the diagnose, not that part with costs on it.

that price is for reman'd, see here what you get. It really is a horrible price and a sad state of affairs these days. You can see the cost, same figure he wrote.

He did mention that it was a “Crate” motor.. I won’t show that to anyone .. I was just in sticker Shock at that time.

For some comparison I got a crate 6.4 Hemi installed on my 2014 2500 at the dealer (under warranty) and figured it was about $13-14K. From poking around online the engine looked to be around 10 and the labor 3-4ish.

I remember from some other threads here of people that know how dealers work said how they approach things will vary based on the techs they have on hand. So, if they don't have anyone skilled with rebuilds they'll just swap big parts like engines and trannys. That's probably why they opted to just replace so you might even consider calling around some other dealers. A buddy recently had to have exhaust manifold bolts done on his Furd F150 and the price variation between dealers was amazing. He ended up driving out of town a bit and got it done for slightly over half what the dealer close to his house wanted.

Crate motor doesnt mean new or not new, just that is comes in a crate, that is why I posted the last video. Crate motors could be new, or they could be re-used-reman-rejuvinated and my guess most crates now are indeed used, as in the block portion, most likely everything else would be new, but I don't know any law that saws it must me new. Those are new blocks in the last video, shows the process, pretty cool?

I’d find a Cummins specialist and have them repair, rebuild or replace the engine. Certainly would pay dealer pricing.
