Just did the passenger side this morning, due to 2 bolts being broken. After removing the manifold, I took a precision straight edge and found it warped 0.030", with cylinder 1 and 4 being bowed outward. I ground it down to within 0.002". I used an 4" 36 grit disc on an air grinder. Was able to remove the broken bolts by welding on a nut, then backing them out without issue. New felpro gasket and dorman hardware(with the loctite stripped off) installed. No leaks and quite again.

Thanks seabrook. Curt, I spent 4.5 hrs at the shop, but I also changed both diff fluids, sprayed waterproof grease on the undercarriage fasteners. I'd say it took 2-3hrs. Not bad really, no surprises, just a good day. .

Pullup, thank you. I plan to tackle both of mine soon, in an effort to isolate my tapping sound (either exhaust manifold or camshaft).

Broken exhaust manifold bolts are easy enough to diagnose.

When the engine is cold, reach in through the wheel wells and grab the corners of the heat shields. If they're loose, broken bolts it is.

Hopefully, yours is just broken studs as well. It sure is a common problem, p!ss-poor manufacturing of the manifolds IMO, but the lesser of the 2 evils for repair.

I wish you the best with your situation.

I replaced my gaskets with RemFlex gaskets from Summit. You will be very pleased with these replacements. Good luck Thanks, I try them out when I do the drivers side.

Checking heat shields from underneath offers a better look-see. I have reached down and wiggled a shield only for it to be intact. From the underside....The back 1/2 was broken away.

Heres a tidbit for comment re: manifolds. Grinding material OFF to get a true surface leaves the manifold even more brittle.....and thinner. What stops an altered manifold from warping again? with less metal to warp? Is this the method of choice? Also, I have heard of guys doing the bolt repair job, and before re-installing the manifolds, they are heated up with a torch, to take the warp out?

The next step up from trying to square the old casting, is to buck up, and buy new ones. Don't these replacements also warp, breaking the bolts again? I'd really like to hear what people have experienced......not think, have gone thru.

Finally, shorty headers. Seems there are guys who will spend hundreds of bucks, to do the job ONCE. I get that.....yet with 114 K on my '14, hundreds seems like a stretch. What have you done to solve the problem, as inexpensively as is possible......

Once the manifolds warp they develop a 'set'. Grinding the mating surfaces to level doesn't affect the rest of the manifold and the problem is solved.

I did mine this weekend and thought I'd post my pics because they are almost identical to yours. I resurfaced my old manifold on a 4"x36" belt sander with 36 grit paper. I heated up the long bolt and tried to get it out with a stud extractor, but ended up breaking it off flush with head. Took me two tries with the welder to get the first bolt out, but second one came out on the first attempt. I had to replace my heat shield as the old one was too beat up to put back in. Took me about 4 hours to complete including putting the tools back. The air suspension made it slightly more difficult. I'm not looking forward to doing the driver's side should that day come.

Nice, impressive you got it flat by hand. I know mine on my 2018 was warped by .060 for each manifold. I didn't get a snapped bolt though as I swapped the factory manifold gaskets for Remflex. I believe they allowed the manifold to warp more allowing the gasket to compress more instead of snapping the bolts. I pulled them around 40k and did shorty ebay headers. Had a heck of time getting them to seal at the collector but sealed right up to the head with remflex gaskets again. I brought my stock warped manifolds to my brothers house who just got a Mill and we flattened it up. Now I'm going to coat them with cerakote again and I will eventually swap the headers off again. Shorties seem to be working fine but they are noiser than the stock manifolds and I didn't notice a HP or MPG gain.
