True that, but I also feel real comfortable recommended RP mostly because I tried a different synthetic filter and literally had to pull it off my truck. I bought 2 for the same price as one RP filter, and it was literally throwing money away and maybe worse. Someone could damage their truck having the wrong filter, it is that important. Low flow can be a problem.

I would have loved the puro synthetic to work like the RP did, then I could save mola and I like the housing grip. Unfortunately, that definitely was not the case. You get what you pay for. At this point I wished I would have tested the Ultra.

As far as whatever suits you, yes but why does it suit you? Because you tested it yourself or bought into whatever someone else said. I say don't even take my word on RP filters, test them yourself. Clearly, most guys are running cheap paper filters, they dominate the market, and they think it suits them. But if they actually test it themselves, I seriously doubt they stick with that opinion. Test your junk, should be first requirement for your dude card.

Do you know if the Pennzoil Platinum filters are worth a shot using?

Never heard of them.

Technically they are called PP HE Filters, but I think it's a Premium Puro Filter with different labeling, not sure exactly.

That is like saying because two different cars are made at the same plant they are the same. Fact is, there are large differences in the filters made at the same place. I'm sure you've seen the RP filter link. Anyhow guys testing their stuff should post up in syn thread, the catch all place for oil AND filters.

What 'test' do you utilize?

A visual test really isn't going to tell you much about a filter, but unless you have the expensive/specialized equipment to perform 'real' testing, that's about all most 'ordinary Joe's' can do,,, Hack it open and take a peek,,,,

Unfortunately, that doesn't reveal a thing about efficiency, flow rate, bypass pressure setting, or other things involved in filter construction.

Again, BITOG has near daily posts with pictures/threads of folks cutting up just about any kind of filter you can imagine. You really don't have to start out by 'trying it/cutting it up' yourself.

If you can't find it in BITOG, chances are, it doesn't exist.

I don't agree with that 100% but I will say the Mopar oil filter is well made for a paper filter. I cut one open and could not believe how well it's constructed, very good filter. And the bypass valve was at the top of the oil filter.

This is the oil and filter out of my Dakota. It was on there for almost 4 years. Rarely driven but lots of idling to keep battery charged. I mainly changed it for fear of water build up. Didn't see any water in first part of the drain and Mobil 1 filter looked decent enough.

I have looked at many posts about filters on BITOG and I don't see a lot of empirical data or actual testing. They conjecture a lot and say just what I just did, filter looks ok or looks great or looks shoddy. The oil analysis section is much more well defined with people showing before and after results when using different oils. I switched from the factory small Mopar filter on my truck to a large Mobil 1 and the oil pressure is slightly less. This may sound like a bad thing but depending on where the oil pressure sender is, it may be a good thing. Typically that relates to a higher flow rate similar to how back pressure is bad for horsepower but good for torque.

Of course,, Everything is made to a spec. If you feel RP has specs that no other filter can match, please post 'em up, along with the specs of the filters that don't compare.

Speaking of specs,,,

Truth be know, the Fram XG has slightly better efficiency (20 vs 25)and a longer advertised replacement interval (15k vs 12k) for less $ than the RP,,, ($6 after rebate vs. 11.xx)

So please remind me again what is so special about the RP filter? There must be something I'm just not seeing,,,

Man, just not showing a lot of love for the Dakota there!!! LOL!!!

My 455-equipped Firebird sat for a couple years with just 'starts' and no real driving,,, Pretty sure it had a OCOD filter and Castrol 20W-50 Dino,,,

According to some, that combination of oil and filter combined with sitting should have caused instant destruction at start-up,,,, :roflsquared:

(It didn't)

Since I'm sure you cut one open after 14 months like I did the RP, I guess your solid. Sounds like you found the best filter in the world, congrats.

Here is some basic information anyone seeking the difference between paper and synthetic filters.

Any Bubba with a hacksaw can become a self-proclaimed expert. The internet is full of these 'specialists'.

Does it matter if I personally cut the filters open myself or if I viewed each of them (and dozens more) cut open online? (Which again, visual analysis is only a small part of the story, but its your basis for argument as listed above)

Have you actually seen the inside of an XG, or any of the other dozens of filters available for a 5.7, or are you convinced after you cut open (1) RP 'nothing is comparable' ?

Lotsa options out there,, You might consider stepping off the soapbox for a bit and broadening your horizons.

You might also consider washing your truck. How someone can be so concerned about filters/oil while never lifting a finger to even consider washing their truck beyond 'rain' is a bit unusual, to say the least.

(Sorry, the 'gravel road / country' excuse doesn't cut it. Lived on em for 20 yrs myself)
