I have a question on the reliability of the Pentastar v6. I got my Ram last December and got the $10k off year end special. The final sale price was $28,900 for my crew cab 4*4 Ram with the v6. I love my truck, v6 performance is good, tows what I need to tow. I have decided im a fan of the Ram, I'm just concerned with the long term reliability of the Pentastar v6. I know the Hemi is extremely reliable, so I could be looking out for another year end deal and probably swap out for a Hemi for not much more money. Thoughts?

when i bought my '13 i had the v6 8sp 4x4 cc like you. i enjoyed it. the only reason i upgraded to a v8 laramie was i got into the laramie for about $50/mo cheaper than my old '13. i had over 2 years of not a single issue. the only reason my truck ever went to the dealer was for oil or a radio reprogram once.

believe it or not if someone would have had a laramie with a v6 in stock i probably would have purchassed that since i use the truck for the "family" car and not really a truck to tow.

Yeah im right there with you, I tried so hard to find a nice, loaded v6 model but anything better than a base SLT was v8 or ecodiesel, so I had to throw that idea out of the window

Glad I picked up the v8 now since in the long run I do plan to use it for towing, but I can understand the desire to get the v6 as it is a solid, reliable motor with plenty of power to move the truck

I have read good things about the Pentastar. However sometimes even on well maintained and reliable engines problems pop up. It's the luck of the draw. Maintain it and try not to worry. How long were you planning on keeping it? The 5.7 Hemi is a very tough engine and I love mine. It would be a must for me in a Ram. But the Hemi is not without a couple of common problems either. Cracked manifold bolts are a big one people seem to have. No engine is perfect.

I did alot of research before I bought mine, and the only issues I could find were the cracked heads on the 12 and 13's. The engine was well designed, and I believe it should last a while. The engine is built for boost, so it has 6 bolt mains and piston squirters. The only thing I worry about with any DOHC engine is the timing chain breaking, but you don't hear about that much. I have 30K on mine now, and I plan on keeping it at least until shes paid off or very close.

I had the Pentastar in my 2014 Wrangler with no issue and seemed like a pretty reliable motor for the most part. As KingTuna mentioned 12 & 13's had issues with heads but seems to be resolved on later production engines.

Only other issue post 2013, is the occasional oil leak from the oil cooler and filter housing assembly on top of the engine. Jury seems to be out if manufacturing defect or caused by tightening the oil cartridge filter cap too tight and cracking the housing. If proper torque of the oil filter cartridge cap is held to, then not a real pervasive issue. Nothing that would keep me away from this motor if to purchase another vehicle with one.

My 2013 CC SLT v6/8 spd 4x4 is going strong without any real issues other than a few paint bubbles that got fixed under warranty. Conventional oil changes based on the oil life meter so far (@80%). Edit: My compass readout is flakey as can be.

Bought it new in March 2014 for $29,400 and it has 23k miles on it now.
(Sat on the lot for almost a year)

Mine is a family/daily driver, only towed a uhaul to move from Va to Indiana, then to SC.

Mods:
- Debadged
- Added oem backup camera to the Ra2 radio
- Added factory steering wheel audio controls
- added oem remote start
- added oem hitch
- added BAK Roll-X bed cover & Bull Rings at stake pockets
- Converted Ra2 to Ra4/8.4 Nav Radio and factory HVAC controls

Still to do:
- Add factory fog light wiring/switch and fogs to tow hook cutouts
- Convert overhead console to HomeLink / garage door console

- whatever else I see here

It's almost a V6 Big Horn now

Ps: The Pentastar v6 is also in several other FCA vehicles and the 8 spd ZF tranny was on some other vehicles/overseas for a while too (German made?)

Car and Driver did a favorable review of the truck with v6/CC/4x4 and kept it around as a long term review vehicle.

The 3.6 is used almost completely across the Chrysler lineup so it must have the corporate something or other (can't think of a good word) behind it.

I forgot to also mention the rumors going around about the pentastar. From my understanding, when they re-design the Challenger and Charger, it was will be on the same platform as one of the new Alfa Romeo cars. That platform will not fit a Hemi in it, so my guess is a twin turbo pentastar will come in the R/T's or SRT's. There have also been rumors that Ram will get the TT pentastar as well, but I don't believe that will happen.
