Hey guys, i tried searching through years of posts on this but never got a difinitive answer. Most never answerd or had results. I have a 2016 ram 1500 with the 3.6 pentastar. I was looking to put on some bilstein 5100s set at 2.1" in front and 1" spacer in rear. My question is considering I have the 3.6 with 3.21 gears what size would be better for less power loss? 295/70r17 or 305/70r17. I know they are not much different and weight wise they are the same. So my question is if I did go to 305s would I have a lot of power loss compared to 295/70r17? Id get the speedo recalibrated as well.

What size tire is currently on the truck?

The 295/70/17 is 33.25" tall.

The 305/70/17 is 33.81" tall.

The stock 265/70/17 is 31.60" tall.

The 295's are 1.6" taller and the 305's are 2.2" taller so you will see a performance difference for sure.

Simple enough to run those through a tire compare calculator. It will tell you exactly the rpm/speed difference from the height change. In addition, wider tires have more rolling resistance so combined with taller tires effectively making 3:21 gears into 3:0 somethings or even less, yes you will definitely see a difference. Except for right off the line, you can offset that using tow haul mode or setting the gear limiter. That said, you are in no danger of getting a nose bleed off the line with the 3.6 with stock tires, I doubt you will really notice the difference.

My stock tires are 265/70r17. Got it, thanks guys I appreciate the responses. I figure power loss with either one. Just trying to see if one is lesser of the 2 evils lol. Just from what I have gatherd 295s might not be as bad?

They are roughly a half inch different in diameter and width…sure as hell wont be a huge difference between the two. But the 295’s should definitely be a little less drastic of a change…just not sure if it would even be noticeable.

If you are concerned about power loss, which you should be, i would definitely lean toward a p-metric or xl rated tire apposed to an lt tire. They will be drastically lighter in comparison to an lt tire, which makes a huge difference as far as power loss and mpg goes.
