See YouTube video link below. I think there's many threads about this same noise, but most seem like the trucks have quite a few miles on it. Mine is doing it at 15k miles. Does this every time I start it cold, temps lower than 25F. It whines, starts and stops whining for about a minute, then it usually stops.

Idle pulley? Alternator? Anybody have any thoughts on how I should deal with this when I take it in (have list of several other things it needs service for). I'm only half way through my manufacturer's warranty, and I don't want issues to persist when I own the truck out of warranty. Never had this kind of crap on my Gen 3 I owned for 10 years.

Thanks

Same thing here with my 2018. Btw, I have a 2014 Town and Country minivan. It sounds terrible on cold mornings. It has since 3K miles. It now has 55K miles, still sounds terrible (whining, whirring, growling) at startup but runs great. The Ram isn't as noisy for as long. But I wonder what the underlying issue is?

I have a 2016 with 68,000km, exact same sound every morning. In -20 Celsius weather.

Mine does the same thing , I have 10k on it and it has done that from new here in GA, even when the ambient temps were warm out (Still with cold start)

Was the block heater plugged in?
Big difference how mine sounds when plugged in and when it’s not
It was -34C/-29F here yesterday morning when I started up at 4:30am- definitely not as loud as the video

No block heater on mine unfortunately. If there's one thing I've learned living 25 minutes from Canada my entire life, it's you boys know how to deal with cold weather BS lol.

My 2017 (21k) miles) did the same thing for the first time when it was 5 degrees out last week. Its been warmer and it hasn't happened again.

A focus group decided that guys like jet sounds more then hemi sounds, so they pump jet noise to make you feel good.

Exact same sound my '17 makes with 9K miles on it. Last winter I never heard it, this winter it started.

Seems to be around 25 degrees or lower, but not always even when its that cold....Im wondering if there is some moisture build up involved (like on the pulleys or something).

Or possibly the viscous fluid in the fan clutch. When Ive been out there and while its happening I havent really been able to narrow it down to a certain spot in the front of the engine, so it could be something in the center like the fan clutch.

Also a thought - active grill shutters? Are they making noise as they get into position depending on where they left off from the last time it was driven?

Kinda annoying considering my 16 year old Frontier that sat outside 24/7 in the same exact weather NEVER made any moaning or groaning noises when starting.

But it seems to be common enough around here that its probably not a major issue.

I have a limited with the block heater on my build sheet. Was not aware you could unplug it.

Sounds like you haven't plugged it in to begin with.

In climates that go below well below zero, block heaters are used to preheat the engine to make it easier to start and warm up faster. They're more commonly used on diesels than gas. I have mine on a fully programmable timer and I can see if it's working remotely.

Love my auto stethoscope for trying to pinpoint noises like that.

I have the exact sound on 2017 5.7 when cold, if I park in garage when below 20 degrees it doesn’t do it! You happen to find out a solution for it yet? Lots people saying it’s normal, but there’s got to be a fix for it. Know many people with Rams and they don’t do it. Going to stop at dealership Monday and ask them hopefully I don’t get that answer
