You mentioned idler pulley, does anybody know if that has actually fixed the problem on the 5.7’s

Sounds like the bearing in the idler pulley is bad or going bad to me. It needs some Redline grease in it with temps that low.
That's exactly what I thought when I first heard mine.Cheap bearing warbling.

Yup, that's what I was going say.

We don't get that cold here, but when it's in the 30s or 40s. One my pulley will chirp until the truck warms up some.

That's probably what is make that noise

Well I did go to dealership today and asked them about the whining at cold start, got the answer I thought I would get ( pretty common) they see it quite often. Said they could go in lot and start some of the new 18 & 19’s and some will do it and some won’t, it is 5 degrees here today. Called to friend today and his wife’s 18 journey has always done it when cold outside. Asked dealer if there was any fix like supposedly fixed the V6’s, said they don’t as of what he been told. Has a V6 to do today, but that’s been hit or miss if it actually fixes it. So if anyone ever comes up with a fix pass it on to everyone here.

I guess thats better than "this is the first we've ever heard of it" :)

And at least they had an explanation, instead of just "normal. sorry. bye."

It does seem fairly common now that ive searched around. What gets me is that mine doesnt seem to be just temperature related. Ive had says of relatively the same temp with the same amount of "cold soak" on the engine, and one day it made no noise but the other it did. Maybe there is a humidity (leading to frost) factor?

Mine does it as well but it's only when it's cold and hasn't ran in a while. That would be embarrassing to be a salesman and have to make up some story to a customer when that squealing starts. Most idler pulleys use sealed bearings so I doubt any greasing or oiling will help. On high rpm surfaces like these (if not sealed) I prefer to use teflon style liquid lube such as Tri-Flow. It's too bad they can't be lubed.

I am part of this club; mine will whine upon start up. I checked the manual and it recommends to plug the truck in at temps -15c or 5f and below. plugged it in the next night and no issues with the engine starting. I checked the engine fluid temps comparing the two nights. -18c first night 0c the 2nd. The block heater warmed up the engine to 0c - 32f the 2nd night with the same -18c outside.

Anyone else notice the internal climate fan whined until it also warmed up?

Block heater is located on the passenger side above and to the right of the head light, under the plastic flap. It is a three pronged plug and uses a black plastic cover to protect the prongs.

I ended up buying a cold weather specific extension cord, my summer cord was as stiff as a coat hanger to unravel and prone to breaking. I bought the US wire one but any cord with SJEOW or better will work

US Wire 98050 14/3 50-Foot SJEOW TPE Cold Weather Extension Cord Blue with Lighted Plug

I have another faint whine that I noticed, seems to only do it when driving slow and it’s in 4th gear. Any one else have this and could comment on it. I have the 6 speed not 8 speed.

Old post but I share everyone's problem with that exact same whine under 15deg temps. A fix would sure be nice as these trucks "shouldn't" make nasty noises like that.
