Hi everyone and thanks for any information you might have.

So I’m doing my first break pad change and I’m having a very hard time getting the rear caliper to retract enough to get back on once the new pads are in place. Is there a trick or special tool. My neighbor has a caliper tool set but doesn’t seem to fit. I did shut off the auto break before I started. I need to caliper to go in another 1/8inch or so. Thanks for the help.

I usually use a large C-clamp to force the pistons in. Just don't crank it too much or you might damage something.

I've been using a 6" C-clamp on my Tundra brakes for years, I'm not sure of the size required for a Ram, because I haven't had to change mine yet.

So thanks for the info and the exactly what I did with the front brakes. But for some reason I can’t get the back to go all the way in. Do you know if the back calipers need to be pushed and turned at the same time?

I haven't worked on Ram brakes yet, I don't know. I know I did remove the clamp seat to fit into the brakes on some vehicle, once upon a time.

I'm looking forward to seeing more replies.

Thanks for the help!

I think I might open the bleeder and see what happens.

I just don’t know if it needs to be turned as it’s pushed in.

gotcha and makes total sense but does that mean I need to take the black electric brake mechanism off? Just can’t see how I can use the c clamp with removing that.

You have to put the rear brakes into service mode if its a electric E brake or you cant compress. Usually on a jeep you go into radio settings MAint and then Brakes and you can put it into service mode.

Yeah I did that before I started, so it’s not that at least I need just like 1/8 inch more to get back on. I checked and the pads the store gave me are correct. Just having a hell of a time getting the caliper to go all the way in. It moved easily and seems nearly flush busy it must go in a bit more. Frustrating for sure.

You need to turn off auto brake AND put it in to service mode. Directly below the auto brake in your radio is a brakes option, click that then will give you the option for service mode which will fully retract the e-brake. Then use a c-clamp, compressing tool etc to push the piston back in. After reassembly of both sides you need to pump your brakes back up and engage parking brake. Then set auto brake back on if you use it.

GTYankee,
That is an excellent video! Although my 24 doesn't need rear brakes so far, I watched the video and explained very well.

Run it again...I had to run the brake service option twice to retract the caliper completely...

Old thread... but I was doing some research. I'm getting ready to do my rear brakes and looking for tips and tricks like "turn the piston while pressing back in" as required on some vehicles.

Do all the trucks have an electronic brake? I haven't spent much time under the truck yet.

The rear calipers have to be turned to retract them. You can rent a caliper retract tool from a auto parts store. I have my own like this.
