2021 2500 6.4 and upgrading to a 5th Wheel

We just got our 2021 2500 6.4 Tradesman last week and we love the truck, pulled our 8100 lbs. travel trailer just a short distance like it was not even back there… Did I say I love this truck?

So now we are looking at a 5th. wheel with a dry weight of 10757. from what I've seen we should be able to pull up to 14,380 lbs. What are your thoughts?

I towed a 9300lb travel trailer with mine with 4.10's with no problem. I feel I would have been fine to at least 10,500, maybe 11,000 but hard to say about any higher than that.

My 1500 as example says 1440 payload and 11350 max towing.

I have a 2019 6.4 with 3.73 and our 5th wheel weighs right around the same as the one you are looking at. It pulls it just fine. Not great, but fine. I also have always had cummins engines, and all have had some type of power adder to them, so it does not tow like those trucks, but I am pretty impressed with how well it does. We only tow about 60 miles one way to our favorite campground and lake, so we don't go far but it does well and there are some very steep grades on our way there. The steep grades don't last long, but they are steep and it gets the job done. Hope this helps some.

I just looked up our unit and it shows a dry weight of 10,619. So, very close to what you are looking at. I would say it that is the camper you really want...go for it. Shouldnt be an issue. Our unit is a sprinter limited 3341 FWFLS if ya want to check it out to compare height, length, and weight to the one you want.

One thing to remember when you're looking at the max towing is what those numbers translate to in performance; the 14,000+ pounds capacity does not mean the trucks will maintain the speed limit while towing that weight. The J2807 specs say that, among other things, the trucks must not drop below 40mph up the Davis Dam incline, which is about 3000 feet in elevation gain over 11 miles. According to an online calculator, that's a long 5% grade. For most, that's the important part, maintaining highway speed. To be fair- they don't tell you how each truck performed- maybe the Ram did 40mph, and maybe it did 60.

With that said, I only tow about an 11,000 pound 5w as I didn't want to be doing 40 mph on long grades if I can help it. I usually pull a few thousand miles per year. So far, the 6.4 and 3.73 has been very good and has given me from 9.1-9.6 mpg at 65 mph. Pulling the 5w is such an easier experience than the TT- enjoy whatever unit you end up with and be sure to share a couple photos once you make the leap.

To expect to be able to pull highway speeds on anything other than flat ground is asking way too much. Compare yourself to a loaded semi and that is a more realistic expectation.

Don't know about that weight, but my 2019 with 6.4 and 4.10 gears pulled my 9000 pound camper very well.

Had to pull out friends camper, 36’ Rockwood with 4 slides, and yes, it’s a travel trailer. Camper was at least 11k maybe more (dry weight is over 9,600 lbs and they are living in it full time). Anyway, my ‘21 Tradesman with 6.4 and 3.73’s pulled it very well.

When we got them home and hitched up our little 26’ 6k lbs camper it felt like there was nothing hooked to the bumper!

I have the same truck OP has but with 4.10 gears. Our 5W loaded weight is about the same as his dry weight and we just finished a cross country trip. The 2500 did a great job. Payload on the Tradesman gasser is about 3100 lbs so that shouldn’t be an issue but I’d still check to see what the pin weight is on the 5W.
