Nwb here....I have a 2017 Ram 1500 Lone Star Crew Cab 4X2 3.6L V6 truck. And I am really thinking about buying a small travel trailer. I’d like to see if what the actual towing capacities this truck actually has? And also what y’all recommend as far as suspension UPGRADES? Just to be safe. I appreciate any and all input! Stay safe! Thanks!!

Need your gearing to know capacity, but you will not need any suspension upgrades as your towing capacity will not exceed the truck's suspension capabilities. You have somewhere between 4500 and 7500 pounds.

Look on your driver's door will, or maybe the door for your payload. Payload is with 150 driver and full fuel.

Subtract wheat ever else you have in the truck and that yield remaining payload.

Nor for the trailer, figure 10-13% of the gross trailer weight for realistic tongue weight.

That's how much trailer. Perhaps a little bit of fudging upwards if you're an experienced hauler.

Payload number is from an empty truck with full fluids.

Payload is all passengers cargo and accessories.

Payload is GVWR minus base weight.

There is no passenger figured into the payload. Number.

When you look in the door jamb you will see a silver sticker with GVWR and GAWR.

You will then see the tire and loading sticker which will have the payload.

Take the GVWR minus payload and you will get your base weight

The 150lbs mentioned is for max towing. With max towing number they used to give 150lbs for the driver. They now do it with 300lbs for driver and passenger...150 lbs each.

Max towing can almost never be met as most people weigh over 150lbs and have a tongue weight over the 10%

Your gross combined rating is found from the chart.

Give me a few and I will be back with the numbers.

You did not say what rear gear and what bed size

So I posted the 5'7 bed and 6'4 bed

So you need to look at the chart for GCWR. This is how much your truck and trailer can weigh.

An easy no brainer approach is to take GCWR minus GVWR and will give you trailer GVWR.

This would also give some capacity room if you are new to towing as well.

So for ***** and giggles I will assume a 5'7 Bed and 3.21 gears...as this will give the lowest number.

And we will also assume a payload of 1700lbs.

When you get the correct numbers we will do this again

So GVWR is 6800 and GCWR is 9850...if you would happen to have 3.55 GCWR goes up to 12900

So with those numbers take the 9850 minus 6800 and you get a 2950 lb trailer. Max row is listed at 4510...so that means they are saying the truck must be loaded to no more than 5240.

Chart base weight is 4980. With the assumed 1700 payload base weight would be 5100lbs. So they are saying on a tradesman trim...you can have a driver/passenger/cargo weigh 260lbs to get the max tow.

Hope this is making sense. If not I can explain deeper.

Looks like a 3k trailer for 3.21 and a 6k trailer with 3.55

If you do not know your rear gear ratio go here

And enter your VIN

Anxious to here your numbers
