So here is what I have found when replacing my 3rd break light seal. First, I ordered this seal from Detroit Muscle Tech and it seemed to me that the seal was on par with the factory seal. I went ahead and pulled the old one, cleaned the surface, and applied the new one. When I went to re-install the 3rd break light the seal did not seem to press and seal around the edges how I had hoped. Not happy with the way the new seal sealed, I went to Lowes and bought the MD auto and marine seal that has been used by many other Ram owners. Today I went ahead and removed the one from Detroit Muscle tech and put the MD on. The seal when in place and re-installed formed a much better seal, even considering that it is not one seamless seal.

I understand the desire to have one seamless seal but from my experience the MD 5/16 x 19/32 is a MUCH better option.

Thanks! In the spring I’ll have to clean off the silicone out on by the dealer and fix this the way it should be fixed.

I did the mod on my 14 2500.. went to do it on my 18 1500 and the gasket was much bigger and improved from my 14 model so I just left the factory one on. Good find though.

I also did the same thing probably more than a year ago just to stay ahead of the problem before it happened and its still holding great. You also cant beat the price at around $8-9 I believe.

I had the same experience with the replacement gasket from DMT. So I ordered a replacement 3rd brake light from the dealer. The gasket on that new light with twice as thick as the replacement gasket from DMT and also better quality then the original gasket that came with the truck. When I pulled the old light off, you can see water making its way underneath the replace gasket from DMT. The new light from the dealer fit nice and snug, with no issues what so ever.

I was just discussing this with my son yesterday. I haven't had any leaks on my 2016 yet but I'd rather fix the issue before I have a wet floorboard and down time at the dealer.

Am I the only one who went from having no problem with the factor seal to having a big leak with the DMT gasket? I figured rather than fix a leak I'd prevent it and installed a DMT gasket. I went through the same car wash with the DMT gasket that I had gone through with the factory set up. I had not one drop of water with the factory one on my 2015 and a literal water fall on the passenger side rear with the DMT one. I figured I pinched the wire in the gasket or didn't get it seated properly so I pulled the light and checked. Everything was 100% perfect so I put it back, a couple of days later it rained and had a puddle under the back seat where I had none before. I pulled the light again figuring I must have done something wrong and as I played with the light I noticed it wasn't sealing very well where it meets the body in the center. The only thing I could figure to do was pull the sheet metal of the roof out some by hand to improve the seal. It helped but now during another rain storm I have a small puddle against the back wall of the cab where it meets the floor behind the rear seat instead of a soaked headline and water all the way into the cubby under the rear seat. I guess my only options at this point are to put the home made hardware store gasket, seal it with silicone, or try a new housing from the dealer. In any case be warned to think twice before buying and installing the DMT gasket, it was a waste of money and created more problems in my case.

I had the same experience...just better off getting a new OEM housing and calling it a day. When using the DMT gasket I had noticed the same thing towards the center of the lamp. And i also pulled the flange/edge of the sheet metal outward a bit to help maintain pressure of the gasket towards the center of the lamp. I took a business card and was able to easily slide it in between the gasket and the body of the truck. With the new OEM housing, I am almost unable to repeat inserting the business card between the gasket and body.

So you bought an entire new housing?? Did Ram change the housing a bit to prevent the know leak issue??
As of right now my DMT gasket is doing good... my stock gasket was dried out and flakey but hadn't leaked.

Glad to hear the 2018 has an improved gasket as I put a new ARE cap on and I would need to remove it to change the gasket.

The housing looked the same - but the OEM seemed to be of a better quality then the original. Where the original gasket felt more like "foam - or spongy material", the new OEM gasket felt firmer and had more of a neoprene feel.

Everything you wanted to know about 3rd brake light gaskets....

The gasket is made from the highest quality material that can be purchased; EPDM foam rubber. EPDM is what all modern industrial building roofing and automotive weather-stripping is made from. Not Neoprene. That's a completely different animal. That material shrinks, dries out and is not UV stable.

1) I have a 2017 Ram 2500 with one of my gaskets on the light for the past 3 years. No leaks. I actually removed it a couple times just to verify. When a gasket leaks you can always see the dried up mud trail (from road dirt and dust) of where the water infiltration.

2) IF there is a leak ITS NOT THE GASKET. It could be; the light is warped, the roof is warped (had one guy actually text a picture of his truck. When I asked what happened to the roof he said his YOUNG KIDS JUMPED ON IT), the rear window seal is leaking, those stupid rubber strips that run down the sides of the roof seams are leaking, the cab lights are leaking, the satellite antenna is leaking. The 3rd brake light is JUST a gasket. It wont solve world peace or fix a flat tire. It doesn't fix any other issues except the 3rd brake light leak IF everything is mechanically sound. Its like if the engine is running rough and you install new injectors and then complain the injectors aren't working. May not BE the injectors. May be a vacuum leak. May be a bad O2 sensor. May need plugs.
I sell Honda taillight gaskets. Those guys are notorious about saying their taillights still leak. But on Hondas there are 3rd brake lights, sun roof, antennas that leak. And on some models they actually have like a dozen clips that hold the rear window trim on. The plastic clips fit in large 1/2" square holes and have cheap gaskets on each of the clips that dry out. What a STUPID design. On those models, THATS usually the problem not the taillight gaskets. But since the customer isn't AWARE of the gaskets on the trim clips it HAS to be the "defective" taillight gaskets they replaced.

3) You wouldn't BELIEVE how many guys will rip the gaskets in half and then say the material must be old or "defective" (love that) cause they forgot the kindergarten lessons about how to color in the lines, use scissors oh and how to remove an adhesive liner. I now actually have to include a video to show how to peel a liner off. Quick preview of whats gonna be on the video; you pinch the gasket on the sides below the liner and it POPS OFF. Maybe I should include instructions :)

4) IF the gasket doesn't fix the leak (again, its not the gasket then) seal it with clear silicone. It'll still be removable and then you can find the actual leak. In fact why not just install an LED bulb and use silicone and be done. Not sure why the factory didn't do that?

PS I GUARANTEE the factory did not improve the gasket material. All the manufacturers use the cheapest products they can. BMW SUV's use the cheapest neoprene (that I spoke about above). When they dry up after a few years it destroys a $1000 taillight. Hondas use the same crap material.

PPS In the gasket world thicker isn't better. Else why not use use a 1/2" thick gasket? All thicker does is distort the light. The light isn't made from tool steel. You tighten the 2 screws on the ends and guess what the middle does. That's why most plastic parts have those stand offs/limiters built into the screw bosses so you cant overtighten. But the standoffs are designed for a specific thickness gasket. Not a thicker one.
Guys have been asking for gaskets for the new $1000 3rd brake light with backup camera built in. Factory doesn't sell a replacement gasket (why would there be a need for a replacement gasket if it's "improved", right?). You have to buy a whole new assembly. Nice.
