Hey everyone, I've been away for awhile and I'm finally ready to get another Ram.. Its good to see this site is blossoming :baby:
My question is: do I stick with a 3rd gen or go to a 4th gen? I'm familiar with the 3rd gens, their problems, aftermarket goodies, etc and I loved the one I had. But its starting to get hard to find them with low mileage around here soo.... I was thinking about looking into the 4th gen. I love the way they look, but I dont know much more about them... any problems with the 6 speed tranny, rear coil suspension, electrical?? I had also read on here somewhere that there isnt much aftermarket support for the 4th gen, is this true? That was one of the biggest reasons I got rid of my '03- I couldnt tune that ***** and the tranny was a slop box...
Hope this isnt a repost- i searched but didnt find much...
BTW.. if I get a 3rd gen it will be an '06-08, if I get a 4th gen it will be 2012- probably a loaded express quadcab

Thanks!

if i could get another truck with no thought about money, i'd get a 4th gen, redesigned hemi, dope ass exterior, not sure about the interior, i haven't seen a clean one yet... jeremy... but they are pretty sick, i'm happy with my truck.

I would def go with a 4th gen if you can afford it. They ride so much better then the 3rd gens. The tuners are out for 09-10 and soon to be released for 11+ from what I hear. I see plenty of aftermarket performacne goodies as well.

Welcome back bud!! You can do eveything you did to your 03 to a 09-10 4th gen at the moment, if you want to do motor stuff the 03-08 5.7 has more parts ALV at the moment. Your gonna stick with a 1500 frame right?

the 4th gens are awesome, but you are not going to have the full tuning abilities that you want with a 2012. A tuner is coming out for them from Bully dog, but don't know the full capabilities of it yet.

in 2011 they changed to a zf rear axle so right now there is no aftermarket support for gears. Getting gears in them can be done but it is more expensive.

Thanks guys! I'll definately have to test out a 4th gen. I would love to find a clean 3rd gen 2500 with low miles but they just arent easy to find, and the ones that are for sale are priced higher than a new 4th gen 1500!
Any issues with the 6 speed tranny?
RH- everytime I log in you got a new truck!

I'd go for a 09-10 4th gen. Coil springs make the ride much better than the 3rd gens and the interior is way nicer.

everything i have seen on the 6 speed is it is the same trans that is the 5 speeds. Its an electronic 6th gear. how that works i do not know, but the 2500's have a true 6 speed

There is not much difference between the 09 and 10s. Only thing I can think of is that the 10s say each tires pressure and the 09s only say when a tire is low.

No issues here with my 09. Glad I have the option to tune and to swap gears. Love it. Had a 2nd gen before this one

I've never driven, riden, or even been in a 3rd gen so I can't say anything about them, but I have a 2012 Crew cab 4x4 and have yet to do anything performance wise other than a flowmaster and a CAI coming Monday but even without anything, they haul ass. My dad has 2011 GMC Sierra with the 6.2 and my Hemi smokes him. And after thinking about it, I can honestly say that I would rather pay to drive my truck than I would to drive any other truck for free

I'm more than pleased with my 08. Almost 50,000 miles and no problems whatsoever.
