I picked my truck up today after having my gears and lsd installed. I paid 1100 for labor and fluids which wasn't too bad. No noise but he said the front may whine when in 4wd, should I be concerned with that? I asked him about breaking them in and all he said was be easy on it for a couple hundred miles. I also asked when should I change my fluid and he told me in 10k-15k miles. I noticed that the transmission shifts through the gears quick but I have been taking it easy. He also said I could drive on the interstate but don't go over 70, don't tow, and don't try any WOT passes for a while. I decided to get on the interstate and at 70 mph I was at 2100 rpm. Does all this sound right? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Good Deal! I paid 3K with an Auburn! ******** about the Whine. Alot of opinions out there about break-in. I followed the directions from the Gear Manufacturer and at 501 Miles I did my first burn out. Its the initial Heat Cool cycle that is most Important, as you need to stop after first 10 miles and let the gears cool. You can leave the Oil in until it is normally due however I changed Mine as soon as the 1 year Warranty was up and it looked good. the Full Synthetic in the front has been in there 2 years and I plan to change it soon.

Congrats and welcome to the Club.

Yea I got lucky and found a brand new Yukon 9.25 master overhaul kit and a brand new oem limited slip for 200 shipped. Got the R&P's and front install kit from Moe's, so I only have 800 in parts. He didn't want to install them bc they were motive gears but he did, he said they were junk and said Yukon, Richmond, and G2 all suck. When he first looked at the gears he said the front set was cut better than the rear and that all the manufacturers above made soft gears. But after installing them he said he had more problems with the front and the rear went together like a charm after grinding the housing down for clearance. All in all I think I will be happy except for gas mileage considering I drive to and from work on the interstate about 45 min each way. At least I can drive the wife's jeep until I get them broke in.

Sounds Good, And after your explaination I understand why the Guy says maybe the front will wine to cover off his experience and beleive, so Ya if the gears are Loved by the Tech "********" if they wine.....LOL... I have Quality Brand Gears which the Gear Center up here in Canada uses Faithfully and is a big franchise outfit here out West! The front diff needs to come off the Truck so makes for some Labour for sure, again Congrats!

BTW: I too drive the Wifes Jeep, When I can!

How long have you had them installed? I want to drive it to work but they only have 18 miles on them and I'm afraid to go 70 mph for 45 min straight this early after install. My original plan was to change the fluid after 500 miles or so and slap my mag hytec diff cover on. I have read that the coating on the R&P breaks down during the break in process and a fluid change is needed afterwards.

all sounds about right, at 70 I'm sitting around 21-2200rpm. there is a break in period, a hot and cold cycle but I can't recall of the top of my head how many miles/ time to cool down period.

I guess ill have to take it easy to be on the safe side. It sucks, it's almost like watching paint dry lol but much worse.

Just shy of 9k miles installed them last August. I waited for a tad over 500 miles then changed the fluid. I been thinking of doing it again here soon. The mag hytec cover is a sweet piece. I would prob wait a couple hundred miles before trying that long of a drive.

4 or 5 heat cycles with the first about 15 minutes then progressively longer. With only 18 miles on it I wouldn't drive over 50 mph. When you reach 150 miles and after driving that cycle reach under and touch the rear end cover. If you can hold your hand on it you are good. If it is too hot to hold your hand on it then keep doing short cycles. After 500-600 miles it should go back and have the pattern inspected and the lub changed. Good luck.. Depending on what hubs you have you might lock a hub and turn the front over some just to spin it.

I do know he ran the truck after he was done with the wheels off the ground for 30 min and then took it for a test drive. About an hour later I drove it home and the first thing I did when I returned was feel both diff covers, and they were hot(not extremely hot). So I didn't drive it the rest of the night so it could cool properly. I will do what most have recommended and drive it 10-15 miles and let it sit to cool and keep the process going until I can touch the covers and them be cool after a short drive as Redtruck-VA recommended.

It;s normal for them to be hot 140-180, but not smoking hot and they will run cooler as they get broken in. I think you are on track from what you have described.
