I am new to the forum and realized my posting probably belongs here, instead of under Ram Trucks.
I have a custom installation of a 2004 Ram 5.7 Hemi with matching 5 speed auto trans installed in a 2004 Jeep Wrangler. It was done when the vehicle was brand new. I am the new owner. I have an issue where, while cruising down a level road, the transmission will downshift 1 gear and just sit there. It will not go back into 5th gear until I restart the vehicle. It seems right before this happens, power drops for a second, then comes back after the downshift. I recently replaced the PCM, which helped various issues, but this is continuing to happen. There are no error codes that appear on the OBD for engine or transmission. The button to turn off overdrive functions, but that seems to drop you down 2 gears. No other signs of any issues. Wondering if anybody has seen something similar on their RAMs.

There are a few things that could potentially be occuring. Either the trans is going into
"Limp-In" while driving which would force a
5-4 downshift.

Or, there is an issue with the 2C clutch which is applied along with the O/D Clutch to apply 5th gear. You didn't say whether there were any other issues with the other gears.

Or, there is an issue with the solenoid pack on top of the valve body.

Thanks, Fast69Mopar -
Other than this described issue, the trans and engine perform with no problems. All shifts are smooth thru the gears. I can manually upshift & downshift. No detectable slippage or noises. This issue occurs very randomly. And it just seems weird that the engine loses power for a bit - like I took my foot off the gas.
It was suggested to do an OBD reading before I shut the engine off to look for a soft error, so I am going to try that tonight.
