I've been told my 2020 Ram 3500 diesel needs a new turbo. The error code showing is P003A. The estimate is a little over $5900 for the work. That seems like an awful lot but everything is outrageous these days. Probably going to seek a second opinion.

I would check to see if it can be rebuilt, here a few places I would check, one is is City Diesel in Decatur AL or Abilene Diesel in Abilene TX

Thanks for the replies. I will do some more research on the options suggested.

Even the city diesel actuator ,and turbo from Genos is half that quote you got . Definitely look into City diesel , either talk to them , or Genos .

I'm wondering how common it is for the turbo to go out? My 2018 went out at about 38,000 miles. I had purchased the extended warranty, so it was covered, first they thought it was only the actuator, but the further they went into it, it turned out to be the whole turbo.

Using exhaust -brake regularly helps keep an actuator and turbo healthy…. so I’m told.

One thing I DO know is true….. Don’t shut a turbo down immediately after working it. I.E. don’t pull off the freeway and into the drive and shut down and head for the house.
Either drive a mile or so at reasonablly low speed to let the turbo cool-down …. or let it idle a minute or two in the driveway before shutting down.
This allows temps to stabilize and the oil in the turbo bearings to be refreshed with cooler oil and prevent “coking” of the oil with the bearings.

Exactly. How i treat my 2000 7.3 w/Original turbo. 300K + miles. Synthetic Rotella since 3rd oil change in 2001.
Was taught to idle down since the first diesel driving job at 18.
I have my wife idle down her 2025 1500 even with the turbo cooling system.

cummins in 2000 do not fail like turbos today, thanks to dpf's and EGR coolers. If indeed the EGR/dpf tanked the turbo it will be a lot more then 5900 for the turbo, that is just a start. You will want to add a egr cooler cleaning or replacement to this regardless of the cost. how many miles and how is it driven? A lot of idleing and short trips?
