I don't know if it's lifters or what but when I start my 6.4 and put it in drive it clicks so loud! Is it the lifters? They just replaced exhaust manifold bolts and it didn't help. Is it the oil draining out of lifters. If so is their a catch can that will help?

An oil catch can will give you an easy 20hp when your V-Tec kicks in, Yo!

From everything I could dig up the PCV system is integrated into the intake, so adding a catch can would be difficult at best. I haven't been able to determine where it's actually pulling the gas/blowby from, but assume it's somewhere under the intake.

We don't have V-Tec yet so would the gains still be similar? :p

Do you guys experience this lifter tick on start up for about 30 seconds?

Could it be whatever cheap oil filter the dealership is using?

Now don't start with those ricer urban legends...there's a thread for that elsewhere on the forum.

A catch can will not help with oil draining from the engine to the pan. A catch can captures misted oil in the PCV system and keeps it from returning to the intake.

The 6.4L engine has an internal PCV system and, while you could do some heavy modding to add a catch can as some folks did with the same system in the 5.7L of the 3rd gen trucks, I'm not sure it would be worth it.

Only time I have had lifter tick is on the first startup after a oil and filter change and when it sits for like 3+ days or more. I attribute that to the ADBV and whatever filter I am using.

Regardless though of ABDV design, eventually the oil will drain from the lifters and oil galley areas over time to cause tick.

The filter used is the same filter used on a 4cyl dart engine. Sometime The anti drain value on the filter is the issue. You can use a MO-899 filter in place of the small filter.

Do you notice the following?

Start an one cold and turn off before reaching normal operating temp, odds are you will still have the tick.

Start drive around the block and allow to reach normal temp, should not have a tick on following start up.
