Maybe its nothing to worry about but I can’t find another 6.4 with the same sound coming from the engine. It kinda sounds like a sewing machine working to me. I really can’t tell if it’s coming from the engine, exhaust or maybe even the bell housing area. Really hard to pin point the exact area. It does speed up as the rpm’s go up. It does not seem to be effecting anything as the motor runs great and have no check engine lights. I know these motors are noisy and don’t expect it to quite but it just echoes off walls and more annoying than anything. Again maybe it’s nothing to worry about just wanted some other opinions on the sound. Maybe someone else has the same sound and it’s normal. I currently have 156000 miles and run redline 0w40 oil. The motor runs strong with no hiccups.

Some of the early 6.4 truck engines came through with out of spec wrist pins, hard to tell if that's your issue though. As far as i know it was an issue on the 14's and was supposedly rectified by 15,but it might be worth checking your build date,it's on the drivers door.

Thanks. I’ll have to check the build date but don’t get any bad ticking on start up. I would think that if we’re wrist pins I would hear a bad tick at start. Sometimes I don’t hear anything until it warms up

The 6.4 engines with the wrist pin issue would rattle quite a bit on cold start. If you’re not getting any rattle/ticking noise at start up it’s probably fine. The video you posted sounds pretty normal to me.

As far as I can tell it sounds just like my 16 6.4 with 112k. I wouldn't worry about it. From what I've gathered searching they're just noisy motors. Granted it's only a handful but the other truck 6.4's I've heard in person sound the same as mine.

Here are a couple of suggestion:
Oil - Penzoil Ultra Platinum 0w40 the recommended oil
If you want you could try Redline 0w40
Miracle Mistry oil in the gas

My truck is so quiet I wonder if it is on sometimes.

I’ll go and put some in the gas today! That’s a great tip and never thought of doing that! Do you think it will quite down the injectors since I’m putting oil through them? But I think I will use pennzoil since it is the recommended oil to use in these hemi’s.

Thanks guys so far for the responses. Maybe not much to be concerned with. I do on an occasion get the piston slap but it doesn’t concern me much after reading about it. I’m going to run red line 5w30 on my next oil change as suggested on other threads. This motor with the miles I have on it runs as good as new even with the noises it makes.

Check your owners manual - I think you use 0w40.

The 0w also has a better additive package then the 5w

More Moly.

More Calsium for cleaning.

i love reading these stories when uninformed folks buy a 6.4 then get paranoid at every little noise and make a bunch of videos and then get brain washed on the forums.so they rush out and buy all that fancy boutique oil and dump mystery juice in the gas tank.
if the lifters are gonna die theyre gonna die. cross that bridge when you get there and put in a better cam and lifter

I’m running redline 0w40 now and going to get redline 5w30 for the next change.

Crazy Jerry you always have great opinions on here. Lol. It’s not about being uninformed about the motor I have in my truck. I’m informed enough not to put a certain type of oil just because fca says so. The great thing about this forum is that if you want an opinion on something you can reach out to the great people on here. Thanks for checking out my post I appreciate it.

From all the research that has been done on here. The 5w30 will help with the piston slap. I don’t get it every start up but it is there from time to time. It’s definitely not going to hurt anything and if it doesn’t seem to do any good then I will go back to the 0w40. I don’t let my mds kick in so that’s not a worry if the weight is wrong for it.

Because the piston slap occurs during cold start up. It’s very obvious what it is. I wasn’t asking if it is piston slap. If I had made a sound clip of the start up and asked about the knocking sound I could understand you thinking I got something twisted and don’t have a clue. But the fact is I made a sound clip of it running at normal idle and wanted to ask an opinion on the sounds it makes. I have no interest in making a clip of that sound because I know what it is.

Since one of my sons just bought a 2014 with a 6.4, I'll ask him to listen to your audio and find out what he thinks. As far as I can tell it sounds just like his at 110,000 miles.

To me it sounds as if you are describing an alternator bearing going bad.
Yeah it’s definitely not up top. If I climb under the truck it sounds more around the bell housing or the down pipes off of the exhaust. I’m not convinced it’s a motor thing but I can’t pin point it either.
