Currently we have 2 2016 ram trucks, both gas (diesel wasnt readily available in our town) One is 2500 with the hemi crew cab the other is a 3500 gas with a hemi. Both of these trucks have trans issues. When I called the dealer I was told that the 3500 would have the 68 rfe in it and the 2500 would have the 66rfe in it. Neither one of them have what the dealer says they do. I called ram, gave the vin for each and found that the 2500 is supposed to have a 66rfe in it not the 68 rfe that is currently in it. We just purchased it second owner and it was having issues..then wouldnt move. Acts like the trans but it never had issues shifting, the trans fluid wasnt burned or smelled it was like new , no metal shavings. I am guessing previous owner swapped them and didnt do it well. Called the dealer and a 66rfe is 2.5-3 months out for new. Trying some other places, it is under warranty. The other truck the 3500 has an aisin seiki trans in it. Now...I am no mechanic at all. I was wondering, if I already have the 68 rfe and it works well, it was installed improperly, couldnt it be installed in the 3500? I know normally this is a pretty pricey swap but if it already called for the 68 rfe and since I will have one when the 66 rfe goes into the 2500 it might be worth it to swap it all over. There are very knowledgeable people here so I thought I would bounce this idea off people that know the subject. Asking for peoples thoughts on the subject? Other than burying the bricks. Although hubs did mention wanting a cannon.

The 68RFE was not offered in a gas 2500 OR 3500. The 66RFE is the correct transmission. For the 3500 gasser, if it has the Aisin, it is not the same Aisin (AS66RC) that is offered with the diesel variant (AS68RC). That said, I believe it was only offered in the cab and chassis models and not the standard 3500s (someone may correct me there). Which side of the engine is the trans dipstick on? That's a good indicator.

Why not just swap it back to a 66 when it dies? I am not sure why you'd want to try and convert it to a 68RFE. Different TCM/ECM, etc...

I'm a little bit off subject here but I'll add my two cents. I have a 2013 Diesel 2500 that has a 68RFE gear box and it failed at 79,000 miles. That's a weak gear box and has a reputation for a number of failure components. I had it rebuilt to a stage two with a triple disk lock up converter clutch so I wouldn't deal with that again. I do tow a 5th wheel camper at about 8000#s, but in California camping generally includes mountain climbing. So, if you have a 68RFE be careful and have it inspected as it has a weak hydraulic pump, Clutch Pack and Input Shaft along with other weak points.

Is that 2013 deleted and tuned? Has the truck been modified?

The 68RFE is a reliable transmission if it's used as intended. It doesn't handle truck modifications well.
