I was looking to add some extra backup lights, and a tailgate light.. "The type of light that goes under the tailgate and has, Brake, Running, Turn and Back up lights."

As you may know they usually come with a 4 pin flat connector BUT NO REVERSE.. It say you have to pull the back up light from somewhere else...

I have a 7 pin (big round) trailer connector on my rear bumper. I didn't want a bunch of unsightly wires going from the outside of the rear bumper to the inside..

I set out to find an answer at Amazon... This is what I came up with

I found this Y harness. It's used to extend the 7 pin for use with a 5th wheel trailer. It is a Y that plugs into the harness under the truck on one end and back into the outlet on the other but it also has all the wires you need to plug into the junction box below.

Y Harness:

I mounted this up under the bed behind the rear drivers wheel. It's weather resistant, somes with various knockouts and plugs and even has the the color coded wire pins labeled. It's less then $10

This is the 7 pin wire box

I put the reverse lights in and tied them in the box. Works like a champ. Even if you want to turn them on with a seperate light you just need to run a power lead from your switch to hot side of the box. The lights are grounded in the box.

Now all the other lights are easily added under this cover.

I hope this help someone else who was looking for a more elegant way to add lights to your truck

I used the same harness except with a 5 pin flat connector. Didn't have to splice into the reverse light wire...just put the right sized Male bullet connector on the light bar reverse light wire and plugged it into the reverse light spot on the 5 pin flat. Works like a champ and I can unplug with no issues.

I considered that as well. BUt when I looked at wanting to hook up other lights like the aux back ups, and potentially running board lights, the flexibility this gives wannented the extra time. Not to mention the cost was quite low for the two items.. Lots of ways to skin a cat as they say.

Put on sudekickbrunning board lights thos weekend. Tapped into the courtesy light plug under the back seat for the white lights and into the front turn signal wire under the dash. All connections inside the cab to reduce corrosion and effects of weather. Didn't need the extra connection at the trailer harness.

I'd NEVER tap into a CANBUS system. Unlike day sof old CANBUS requires 2 way communication to the computer. If you start adding "taps" you start risking this communication... CANBUS is how they get vehicles to supply more information with fewer wires. My Honda Goldwing has 12 Computers on a CANBUS system. If any of your "taps" short out you risk the destruction of the computer system it's connected to. Guys on the older Goldwings "Tapped" into the CANBUS system on the new GoldWing, the light shorted out and it cost him $1700 not under warranty. The good news is, it's your truck and you get to do it anyway you want.

Luckily those tiny under seat LEDs in the back are using the same plug as the heated seats..lots of places to pull power from and no issues of faults or codes being thrown when powered up like some LEDs do on the CANBUS. Besides, put two more light strips with turn signals and coutys white lights on the trailer circuit was a bit much, since I already have a OPT7 triple light bar on that circuit. Didn't want to chance an overload when I do pull the trailer.
