8.4A to 8.4AN

I went to my local dealer to ask about the Nav add on, was told it would be 700 plus tax. Did a little whining about this to a couple of buddies over the weekend about the cost when one of them who works at a salvage yard said he could get me a 8.4AN out of a Ram 2500 for less then half that. My question is are they a direct swap?

Yes. Direct swap. And people have found them for as low as $250. Average price seems to be around$450-500

do your research on them. you may need the dealer to do some sort of an "unlock" to the radio for the swap to work. i believe its been talked about on here what is needed

on a side note with the 8.4an you will also get hd radio and the "3d" maps (there is a u-connect website that shows a comparison between all the available radios

I'll be certain to do some more research, I defiantly don't want to buy an expensive brick :)

Is the sound quality any different? I believe only the AN is the Alpine, correct?

Every thing I have read it has HD sound so I would think better sound quality

The swap will be PNP for you. You will need a 4 digit unlock code for the radio available from the dealer or navrepair.com online 10.00. The only other speed bump you will have is that you will have to get uconnect to change the radio loaded against your vin. Going from an 8.4A to an 8.4AN they should give you no problem, they just want to make sure the previous owner does not claim it to be a stolen radio.

There is a write up on the other forum where a guy did exactly what you want to do. Took some wrangling but uconnect changed it for him. Oh if you do not use uconnect don't worry about it at all then. Oh one last thing you would have to call XM to switch your account to the new radio ID, very simple.

incorrect.

AN is the factory equipped nav unit with hd radio also. there may be a few other items also.

the "A" is nav ready, but the nav is a little different than the AN version.

I have a AN with no factory alpine setup

Ok thanks. I did not see an option for Alpine when ordering my Laramie. I can rest easy now and spend that $500 upgrade on parts.

You get HD only with a 8.4AN
