Hi, I have a 6.4 hemi that I want to swap into my 85 d150, I keep seeing 8hp70s from rams for sale and wonder if there are any differences between ram and car (charger/challenger) 8hp70s. Thanks!

Output flange and the way the coolant lines come out of the transmission are differant. The cars don't use the thermal management unit/heater,so their coolant lines use a threaded port.Swapping into something like an 85,the car transmission might be the easier one to work with, you're looking at a custom driveshaft anyways,so the output flange shouldn't be a big deal. You'll need to fab up a center bearing with a slip yoke if your truck doesn't already have a 2 piece driveshaft,as there's no slip yoke into the 2 wheel drive 8HP70's, the 4X4's use a slip yoke into the transfer case
If you stumble across a 1320 Challengers 8HP70,grab it,as it has the TCM that allows for a tranny brake, and uses a factory high stall convertor

For all intents and purposes they are the same transmission. As stated the differences are external. You're going to need a custom driveshaft anyways. And for the cooling lines, again, they're going to have to be fabricated anyways, and Earl's makes all the AN fittings and line you'll need for that.

None of this is going to be plug'n'play outside of bolting it to the engine. You'll also need to fab up a way to incorporate the dial shifter.

Boosted Motorsports on YT has a series where he 5.7 and 8HP70 swapped an '86 Ram 1500. Might be worth checking out that series of videos.

I appreciate the replies guys I'll be looking into a car transmission, I have the adapter mounts and transmission cross members from holley and I've found that these guys that go by sublime parts on YouTube refer people who are swapping to do a standalone harness for the 8hp70 and they make the standalone for the engine. Thanks for the replies!

There's also Russell at Sound German for the wiring harness, and stand alone ecu for the 8 speeds.
