Hello. I have a 2014 Ram with the 5.7 Hemi and the 8HP70 8 speed transmission. First question is how much fluid does it take to fill back up when you change fluid and filter? And the second question I have is how do I know if I have a shallow or deep pan?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks all

As far as I know the ram truck only uses the deep pan. The shallow pan was used for the jeeps and cars. Not sure on fluid amount. @Wild one do you know?

There seems to be some variety on the amount needed. Some guys only get 4 litres out ,while some guys have said they've needed 6 or more litres to top it back off after a pan/filter change. If it was me,i'd have at least 6 litres, maybe 7 on hand, with the idea of either keeping any extra fluid,or returning the extra fluid.Nothing worse then being 1/2 way through the job and running out of fluid to finish the job.I'm old school though,i'd rather have to much on hand, then not enough:waytogo:

I think I drained about 4.5 qt and added 5 qt back in when I changed mine. Full capacity is 7 or 8 quarts. I assume you know that a filter change means a pan change on the 8 speed? Plenty of threads about fluid changes in the engine and performance section, including the fill procedure.

No I didn’t realize you have to change the pan completely when you do the fluid. What’s the reasoning behind that?

Filter is part of the pan on oem pan. There are aftermarket pans that use a separate filter.

OP may want to search the forum for threads on doing a service on the 8HP70. It’s not a simple drain and fill; there is a specific process that must be followed.

best,

Mine was just about the same as Joes

On the drain, about 4-1/2 came out, and the fill took about 5-1/4 total. I bought 7 qts. when i did mine.

Having someone to help run through the gear changes during the refill process helped alot. Like Joe said, there's plenty of excellent info about fluid changes on this site.

Best of luck with your fluid swap, may it go smoothly.
