Recently bought a used 2014 ram with 41000miles. It seems to have hard up and down shifts at low speeds pulling out and stopping. I took it to dealer and they said no fast relearn for it and no software updates. So they just clear all the parameters and told me to drive it for a week or two and see if it helps. Next step he said would be valvebody. Did any with this problem ever get it corrected or will I have to live with it?
There’s a lot if posts on the forum about this, and I too have experienced similar shifting annoyances.
Unfortunately I have found that the vehicle shifts best in the leaning function, but soon returns the unwelcome patterns. Some suggestions:
1. Take notice if the shifting concerns are when the vehicle goes from MDS (ECO mode) to Normal. In stop and go traffic I have noticed it can be a little abrupt.
2. Turn off MDS (see owner’s manual) and see if that makes a difference. Many people routinely turn off MDS to exercise the full 8 speed. This has made my “in traffic “ experience a little better.
3. Increase stopping distance, and slow down sooner. Sometimes the vehicle will clunk if you decelerate too quickly and come to a stop.
4. If the PCM and TCM software is up to date, the. The dealership is correct that the next step is valve body.
5. Judge the shifting when the trans is up to temp. When the vehicle is cold, I have noticed the upshift is sloppier on initial acceleration.
The transmission is generally regarded as a good one, which shouldn’t require much maintenance or attention. Many, like me, who are very sensitive (neurotic) about sounds and feels spend a lot of time troubleshooting when there really isn’t an issue. Best to have dealer document just in case.
Hope it helps.
