Hey y’all I’m stuck I have a 2017 ram 1500 with the 5.7 hemi and recently I’ve had the A/c go out. I smelled rubber burning and a/c began to blow warm. Found the clutch for the a/c burnt up so I replaced the clutch thinking it would solve my problems, but no I go to turn on the a/c and clutch begins to smoke again. I’ve checked the compressor and it spins freely, also tested the coil and it’s clicking also checked the fuse they are all good. Just stuck at the moment and can’t think of anything else. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Need to put gauges on the AC system and watch it, if the pulley spins and the center stops spinning while still activated - and thus burns. Either A. your pressure is going sky high and seizing the compressor or B. the compressor just seizes up when spinning faster or C. the clutch gap is too wide or D. the voltage is low at the clutch.
I really can't think of any other reasons off hand.

Like mentioned above clutch gap when you put it back together did you re install the shims on the outer piece so it does not rub? they are very easy to lose they look like small washers.

Yes I reapplied the shims that it had and checked the clutch gap which I believe for the 4th gen ram is .014 to .024

I will need to check pressures in the morning and voltage to the clutch. But for the clutch gap I believe the spec is .014 to .024, and I measured it at .015 so it should be good.

When my AC clutch melted I got a whole new (not rebuilt) complete compressor from UAC Co. on Amazon for $218 back in 2020. Even came oil-filled, no core return needed.

Just replaced mine for the same issue. The compressor came apart internal and spewed metal through the whole system. The condenser was plugged. When I took the dash out to replace the broken doors (fixed it all at the same time) I found the culprit. The evaporator was covered in oil. It developed a small leak allowing the oil to be pushed out of the system. The compressor detonated because it ran dry.

If that's the spec, you should be good. Usually the gap on the upper end of spec is better as when the clutch engages it tends to grab better vs. sliding closed.

Read my experience a couple years ago. I list PN I used to fix it.
