I have a 2014 White sport quad cab, with the common "rust spots" on it, and need some advice. I have seen the term "decontamination" used and also the clay bar process to remove them. I have no experience with either, and live in a small town with no one offering these services. I dont want to hurt the paint, but I want to get the spots off before they contaminate the paint further. Which process is the correct way to remove the spots? Does the decontamination remove them forever, or is this something you have to do once a year or more? I just want to do the best method possible. Its finally warming up her so I can wash it, and put it in the garage to clean it. Im going to have to do it myself because I cant find any local shops with experience with clay baring. Thanks for the help

You can do all this removal yourself in your driveway. Order yourself a bottle of IronX and use that first, follow it up by going to your local parts store, in their detailing section you'll find a clay bar kit (Mother's, or Meguire's are the most common) and come with a bottle of their detailing spray to act as the lubricant. I would never pay a shop to do something as simple as clay barring a vehicle unless you seriously don't have a few hours to work on the vehicle.

I clay my truck twice a year, once after winter in the spring and then in the fall before winter. You should only have to IronX the vehicle once but you have to play that by ear if you live where you get exposed to a lot of road grime, next to a rail line, or run metallic or semi-metallic brake compounds.

Have a look through this video, it's got some good info for doing both.

I have a white truck with those rust spots also. Clean the truck really well, strip the wax if you have any on. Then you will need to clay the whole truck. You can order the clay online many places, I like Adams. The clay will need a little lubrication but with a little elbow grease, those rust spots will be gone for good. Make sure to seal the paint after all of this work in order to protect it. There are many YouTube videos that show the process.

I've heard clay bar is the best. I'm just waiting to do my own. The bar should remove the contaminants but I'm sure you'll have to do it every so often because you'll probably get new contaminants

This. I have to clay bar mine after road salt season, and again at the end of summer. But, after the initial clay bar'n and sealing, it goes WAY easier the next go round.

Thank you for all the answers. I'm gonna check out some videos, and check out the IronX, just want it to look good and be protected. Gonna check out Adams products as well. Thanks again!

So you spray ironX all over your truck? I just read the autogeek page on it and it seems like if you dont get it off fast enough it will stain your paint purple.. I need to clay my truck. I have been through 5 major storms since I bought it with no wax, my paint hates me right now and it seems like I should take the steps in this thread.. I may do this next weekend

Edit: I did some youtube searches for this stuff and it looks like it stay wet long enough for you to agitate it, or just rinse it off. However There is a product they make called TR.IX and it combines both IronX and TarX, something that would help us white paint guys out a lot. I think I may buy this stuff.. I may not need to clay at all.

Still clay the truck, the IronX and TarX only chemically remove certain contaminates, it doesn't remove the small dirt and similar other contaminates that have fused themselves to the clearcoat. If you want it truly clean then you need to deal with all contaminates, not just the easy ones.

eh, claying sucks. I live in NewEngland, it will just be the same story next winter. I'd just feel better to get most of the crap off then wax it up to seal it so I can get some protection..

I believe they are caused by metallic brake dust that sticks to the paint and eventually rusts.

Yup, that's correct. Industrial fallout, rail dust etc. A good decontamination product like Iron-X and/or Iron-X wash soap, then a good claying session will help eliminate them. Once they are off, it's time to protect with a good sealant.

My white Sport had a fair number of spots like that after the winter season, I have since cleaned it up and maintained it, and haven't seen a single spot return after 4 months.

They will come back year after year. There's no way to get rid of them forever, believe me I tried for 3 years! I didn't clay bar it, I just took a bug and tar remover sponge and scrubbed away with soap and water. It's a bit of work but was cheap and never harmed the paint. This is the reason I bought a black truck instead of another white one!

My summer ride is black, and I have owned several others in the past, and black is ridiculous to keep clean, I didn't want to go that route with my truck - plus I think it looks best in white :)

Once I get full use of my garage back, I will be doing a full detail on my truck and most likely sealing it with Opti-coat and I'm confident that my paint will be safe for a long time.

Haha oh yes black is definitely its own kind of "fun" to clean! I prefer the white but the rust drove me nuts lol! Decided to try something different for a change!

Black is the only color I know of that if you even fart, somehow a scratch or mark will appear on your paint. Hardest to keep looking good---best looking when it has just been polished, sealed and waxed. :roflsquared:
