Although I have never done it myself, technically you can do all the work yourself if you have the proper tools. I believe the most dangerous part is opening the system and releasing the refrigerant. Legally we are not allowed to release that stuff into the atmosphere. If you happen to know an HVAC guy, they can purge the system the right way. Putting the components on, sealing, and charging the system is fairly easy and straight forward.
Since the system is pressurized, I do believe you end up losing everything in the system. Besides, the system needs to be flushed anyway, so if you can swing it, take it to the shop and have them install it.
And once you open the system you're letting air and moisture in which is apparently a killer, I'm told. The dryer should be replaced at the very least. I'm a decent DIY guy and have been successful in most of my auto repair endeavors, but when I figured I could do the AC thing myself pretty easily, I found out that it's best to leave that to the pros. Long story short, I ended up with AC delete and a bypassed compressor. I was quoted about the same price for mine several years ago as well, so I decided I'd do without.

I have a truck with a/c, and one without....and I know which one I'd rather drive to a job interview or date.....IN AUGUST.![]()

Note, I no longer have that vehicle...![]()

Indeed. I dunno what I'd do if my a/c went out.![]()
I actually made it 3 years without it. No doubt it was brutal in the summer when we'd get 102 degrees with 90% humidity, but heck. I figure the pioneers of yesteryear dealt with worse.
