Does anyone know a way to scan the four wheel ABS system for fault codes without having to rent the DRB scanner or go to the dealer? It's a totally different setup than RWAL where you simply ground out a pin for flash codes.

I'm gonna bump your thread, cause I'd like to know too. I have read that a snap on mt2500 can be configured to do the task, but you gotta have the right cartridges and personality keys I believe. I can say that harbor freight scan tools don't work. I tried one of the zurich brand ones and it freaked out my dash while trying to check abs codes. I'm guessing you have the abs/brake light on too?

Just the Abs light is on. Brake pedal sinks and the brake light comes on once in a while. That could be a vac booster, or the abs valves need to be bled. Abs light stays on all the time. Tested the rear axle sensor and it had continuity, so I believe the issue is somewhere else.

Brake light only usually indicates one side of the brakes isn't working as well as the other. IE, if the rear is malfunctioning or leaking and the front is ok it will set off the slide valve sensor. Check your hydraulic components for wear and leaks. Especially check the hoses, and the hard lines. They like to rust above the fuel tank where the bed/cab gap is. If the drums aren't adjusting up properly it can result in a soft pedal.

I miss read your post, I thought you said it was only the brake light. If it's only the abs light, I'd bet it was just a wheel speed sensor. With 4 wheel abs there is a sensor pointed at the diff on the rear axle, and there are sensors at each front wheel. I just looked up the 1995 manual, and It looks like 1995 has a separate port for abs diagnostics.

Yep, I've read it. It states a DRB scan tool needs to be used to check for codes and I'm not a fan of buying guess parts.

EDIT: Crap, nevermind 1995 appears to be OBDI

EDIT2: Or is it, look under the hood and I think there is a sticker that will tell you

There are 3 types of the hand held scanners 1)OBDII, 2)OBDII+ABS and 3)OBDII+ABS+SRS. You can go to a parts store, just make sure that it is atleast a #2. When my wheel speed sensor on the Jeep was snipped, I had to educate all the parts places. i don't know how many times heard "I always wondered what the difference is".

ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS Dodge OBD1 Pre 96

1. Cycle the ignition key ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON within 5 seconds. To cycle the ignition key ON means to turn it only as far as it takes to get the radio to come on. It does not mean to turn the engine on.

2. Count the number of times the "check engine" lamp on the instrument panel flashes on and off. The number of flashes represents the code. There is a slight pause between the flashes representing the first and second digits of the code. Longer pauses separate individual codes. For example, flash-flash-flash [pause] flash-flash represents the code 32.

A code of "55" represents end of error codes. If this is all you get then no error codes are stored in the computer. This is the normal condition

CODE Description of Trouble Code
11 Timing belt skipped 1 tooth or more from initial learned value, Intermittent loss of either camshaft or crankshaft position sensor, No crank reference signal detected during engine cranking
12 Direct battery input to PCM was disconnected within the last 50 key-on cycles (normal)
13 No change in MAP from start to run
14 MAP sensor voltage too low
15 No vehicle speed sensor signal

Cycling the key for OBD1 codes doesn't give any info on ABS systems. There is an ABS system diag port (6 pin?) at the bottom of the dash support, right of the steering wheel for 4 wheel ABS. I don't think the autozones of the world carry the scanner for this.

Coolbreeze, did you end up finding how to self-flash the codes for this without a scanner, or how did you end up scanning and resolving this? I have new to me '94 2500 with V10 and all wheel drive ABS system and am trying to diagnose like you were. Thanks for any info. and help.
