Has anyone ever heard of this? I'm not thinking of trying on the chrome plated plastic wheels on the Ram. But I am thinking of trying it on some real chrome wheels. I'm also open to other suggestions.

You guys think this is too far gone for one of the Meguiar's PowerBall kits or something similar?

That's gonna take A LOT of elbow grease to get out, if it comes out at all.

I gotta start trying something. I don't want it to keep getting worse.

once its clean there are coating you can put on it to help prevent this. Ive never used them but on gearz/trucks they used something that seemed pretty cool. I forget the name of the stuff but its was somewhat like a clear platidip if I recall....

Our Enclave has chrome wheels and all I use to clean them up is Adams Metal Polish #2 and a mothers power cone drill attachment. They look like new when done! I then put an application or two of their Quick Sealant which lasts an amazingly long time.

I may give that kind of stuff a try before using the aluminum foil method.

I was going to try my trusty Nev-R-Dull wadding polish. Because it has no grit to it it can't possibly hurt.

I used a buffing wheel and some polishing compound in mine, it works perfectly and no damage done, out on a little wax and your rims will look brand new

I have used it on two sets of rims when brand new. It seals out the oxidation by filling the pores of the metal. I was impressed with it on both the Audi A4 and the Durango the rims stayed looking awesome and they saw different elements being car and an SUV. I only them spring summer fall no winter except maybe first snow.

An old motorcycle trick is to use fine steel wool on chrome. I've done it and it worked! Try it on something safe first...

Yup. I had my rims on through a nasty Pennsylvania winter..I almost cried when I looked close at them this spring. Get yourself the finest steel wool you can 0000. I think Lowes should have it.
I put the chrome polish right on the steel wool and went to work.
Its abrasive, however chrome is a harder metal than the steel wool.
So you wont scratch anything. :D
Afterward rinse off the wool dust with some water...
I finished mine with Chemical guys JetSeal109. And I literally havent had to touch my wheels since April!!!!
