Great question...
The first number is what the oil will be like on those really cold mornings here in North Dakota. You can always use oils that have a differing first number i.e. 0W-30, 5W30, 10W30 could all be used in the same vehicle and the decision is based on the temps which the vehicle will run in. I like to run 0W-20 in the winter here because it flows better on startup and is supposed to help with fuel economy. I like to use 0W-30 in the Journey and Durango in the winter as well.
very informative.... i can just imagine what the winters are like there. I used to live in South Dakota, which was pretty cold, but not as cold as where you're at. Went to Minneapolis a couple times in January which was bitterly cold.
I don't envy you guys up there. I knew a guy who drove an hour to work in North Dakota and during the winter it became so cold his Charger Daytona sometimes never warmed up enough to blow warm air!
