Not MPG again!!

Look, I know that it’s a truck with a big V-8 in it, I didn’t expect to get good mpg. When I bought the truck it was averaging 12 mpg. I put 3000 miles on it as bought, and continued to average 12.

I’ve since put a rack, and an rtt on it, and now I’m down to 11. This is combined City/Highway, but I am probably 50% highway. And I don’t drive with a leadfoot.

My question is this, is it unreasonable to expect a little more? Is it reasonable to take my brand new truck to the dealership and ask them WTF? Are they going to take me seriously? Is there anything they can actually do?

They will likely do the same thing you can do, disconnect the battery, let it sit for awhile, then reconnect to get the ECU to "relearn" your driving. It's not going to help much if any, but you can do it. 11 seems a little low, I run between 12-13 (hand calculated) and I'm lifted on 35's with the ****** 3.21 gears.

Can you store your RTT for a little while and test the mileage without it on? Is the RTT sticking up over the top of your cab catching the wind?

It stands for Really Tall Tennisplayer, he carries them around in the bed at all times. It's an overlanding thing, you never know when you'll want to play doubles.

No, it's not unreasonable.

Ours is factory (minus air filter and tires), and here's our most recent OTR trip: 3 adults, luggage, 300mi round trip, busy roads, 80 something degrees outside, windy, wheels who could need some balancing (that was with the old tires), some cruise control at times and surely no turtle speed.

Avg MPG 18.6 with half a tank left.
I'll keep going another 300mi under those circumstances, easily.

While our friends joke was quite funny, a RTT is a rooftop tent. And mine does not sit above the cab.

Twelve to me is abnormally low for a stock 1500. I average 13-14 with both Power Wagons, and I’ve got a heavy foot.

Half tons stock should be in the 17 range.

I would take it in, but not accessorized. They will take the easy out and blame it on your add-on parts.

You bought it used, correct? Any modifications by previous owner? Tires/wheels? What gas are you running? How hilly is your normal driving area? Because, frankly, that seems like it could be quite reasonable depending on the answers above.

I would think the added weigh along with the change in aerodynamic from adding the roof tent is why you have a mpg loss..

and I can get over 27mpg in my ecodiesel at 75mph. Doesn't care what I'm hauling. Headwind will drop it down a lttle.

Don't know if you have the eco mode or not, my truck increases at least 1mpg when I drive without the eco mode in my '19 1500 Classic crew 5.7. I try to remember to turn it off every time.
