I have a 2010 Ram 2500 with 182,000 miles. On the dash it says its getting about 8.6-9.6 miles per gallon. Last night I put three gallons in and went about 14 miles and the light is on again. I will have to do the plugs soon. What should I expect out of this for MPG and what can I do to help the MPG?

182,000 with the original plugs? I replaced the plugs in my Toyota FJ at 147,000 miles. It still ran great. I was surprise it ran at all. Plug(s) gap was 3 times recommended and the center and ground electrodes were very very warn.

I'd do a compression test while replacing and closely inspecting the plugs.

I can't tell you what kind of mileage you should expect. Arguably the biggest factor with fuel economy is the driver (driving habits) with a well tuned engine. But where you drive, length of idling, and weather conditions also play into it. Sounds like you've neglected the spark plugs. Have you been keeping up with other maintenance, like oil/filter and air filter changes? Quick acceleration and heavy braking/accelerating kill fuel economy. What kind of driving style would you say you have? Spirited driving uses more fuel than casual driving. If you're really serious about improving your fuel economy search the interwebs on hypermiling.

I do not know if the plugs are original.

a 2500 with 182k miles....? the average for that truck (new) is about 12 to 16 tops. you didn't mention what tires you have on there, if it was lifted, and more importantly, what you use the truck for, nor have you mentioned any previous tune ups.

Hemi's are big engines, and if anyone is looking for fuel economy, you picked the wrong truck.

You are on winter gas, so that will get better soon when summer blend starts. You have one of the worst transmissions for mpg's I think, you have the 5 speed? So they are a disaster, I know I have one, and do not get much better then you. Try pushing tow haul button every trip for a tank, this might help, it stops the bogging rpm's that kill mpgs. If it works you can tune shift points with tuner. Check air filter clean throttle body is the easy stuff. I'd probably just change PCV at this point.

Read this thread, especially the last vid that shows how it cleans injectors, get that pattern back to good atomization. The white paper says PEA products are the most effective at cleaning injectors and combustion chambers, however the boroscoped tests by many sources proves this is the ONLY known effective one. You can also watch Chris fixes boroscopes that proves most of them do not work, sadly he didn't do a test on this product, but we have 5 different sources and testing with visual proof. This is the lowest price I have seen in a decade, get 6. Now, you put two bottles in per tank, and you only use it when you are going to change the oil soonish, like the next tank. The concentration amount is what matters, 1/2 a bottle in 4 tanks is about useless, two bottles in one tank is going to erase carbon in chamber and in injectors.

New shocks and tire pressure could get you better mpg's as well. However, new tires will do the opposite, so set the tires on the higher range of psi for your tires. Sometimes in winter the psi gets low, so this will help.

More info would really help, did you just buy the truck?
Has the milage changed , are you pulling anything, what speeds ate you driving.
Driving these with a almost empty fuel tank will be hard on the fuel pump
Gear ratio. City driving is way harder on milage then out on a flat highway.

May 04. 2wd stock 17’s. 3:55’s. On/off hwy & in traffic all the time. Has always gotten 14-14.5. On 87. Until my injectors got dirty. Went down to 10-11. Then I got a used set from Jy cleaned myself , went back up to 14. It’s a 5.7. Truck has over 420,000 miles. Engine has 100,000 less.

It is a 2010 Ram 2500 5.7 Mega Cab. 182,000 miles. I bought it a month ago. From what I see it was not maintained although the drive train seems good. The tires are BFG KO2s. It may need suspension. I can't get it to bounce though when I test the shocks. It may be lifted I do not know what these look like stock. I will do the plugs soon but right now it needs everything for brakes. Rotors, calipers and pads. All four wheels . Maybe you can say it its lifted this is the pic. So far only commuting with it. I added a tonneau. I replaced the front passenger caliper and pads. I could not get the caliper bracket bolts off for replacing the rotor. Both front calipers were seized. The driver side is next. The rear pads have 2000 miles left until they are gone. I replaced the exhaust system from the cats back. It was falling off. The brakes are next. I changed the oil. Then the plugs. I habe to get the tie rods and supspension checked and they may need to be replaced. I'm aftaid to look up "death wobble". :) IMG_3774.jpeg

Good luck with the truck !
Looks nice !
From the picture to me it looks lifted and IMO a lifted truck !
My guess a 4" or 6" lift !
Have you had the truck scanned ?
Bad O2 sensors would lower MPG a bit !
Many local car parts store scan for free ! And your local garage may also
Thank you for your follow ups a very interesting thread !

If your brake calipers were sticking that can have a great impact on your mpg.

I dunno . I think l have realistic context & expectations, and l'm reasonably pleased .

'17 1500 4x4 quad , 3.92 gears .
20- 21 mpg highway, and during the work week 17. Something occasionally breaking low 18's . My work related
Driving is typically 400 some mi / week , and totally random mixture of everything from 57mph cruise control , to stop & go crawl, stop sign every two blocks , etc .

For comparison, overlapping or within 1mpg of Mrs Biggfoot 's 5.3L Yukon , ( with 3.42 -ish llRC) .

Further comparison , 3.0L Ford Ranger 2wd was +/- 20 local & commute , 22-24 highway. So for 140 HP vs 395HP , plus 4wd , l'm good with that .
