I think there is a misconception on how and when auto park actually works, and most of the ******** seems to come from people that don’t even have it. In order for auto park to engage, you need to be going 1.3mph or less, the driver door must be open, seat belt unbuckled, and foot of the brake. To put that into perspective, if you’re sitting there with your foot on the brake at a complete stop, and you decide you need to back up with the door open and your seatbelt off, so, you got your foot on the brake, you shift into reverse, AS SOON AS you take your foot completely off the brake pedal, it shifts into park. This is the equivalent of parking on a slight incline, shifting into park, and taking your foot off the brake without setting the parking brake. Not even close to slamming it into park, and hardly stressful on the parking pawl. I would venture to say that MOST people don’t use their parking brake AT ALL, and somehow the parking pawl survives, let alone the once in a blue moon someone will get auto park to engage.
If you back up with your foot on the brake just enough so the switch is engaged (brake lights are on), auto park will not engage.
If you start off backing up with your foot on the brake, and you get moving faster than 1.3mph, and you take your foot off the brake, auto park will not engage.
If you know how to back up properly with the mirrors and all the other technology provided to us on vehicles nowadays, auto park will never engage.
