AWD tires

Ok i have a question that I'm hoping you can answer. i have an 05 ram 1500 AWD . i noticed that the front tire needs to be changed. its wearing on the inside. can i replace the two front tires or do i need to replace all 4 since its an AWD truck? anyone with this truck have any issues with only replacing 2 tires? any insight would be awesome.

I think you mean the truck is 4 Wheel drive.. AWD and 4WD are different in how they operate.

On a AWD vehicle yes, all 4 tires should have the same trad depth, so the AWD system can function as designed. I know this from my time spent with the Mitsubishi Evolution X. Which had a fantastic AWD system.

On these trucks, being 4WD. they only put power to the rear tires, unless you switch to 4WD. So in this case, i would say it is perfectly fine to only put on two new tires.

If you do only put two tires on. i would put the new ones on the back, as you will wear them faster than the front. Also, i would get an alignment done after, as is sounds like you have some uneven wear. Which could be due to camber, toe, or caster being slightly out.

They did have Rams with an AWD/4HI/4LO around the 2004-2007 range. My 2005 Durango, which was made from the Ram 1500 parts bin, was AWD with 4lock as an option.

You can replace just 2 tires, but you have an alignment issue that needs correcting or you will have the same uneven wear and need to replace tires early again.

Fix the alignment issue or suspension issue- possibly tie rod ends- before you drop money on new tire(s). You can replace in pairs on awd if the others aren't spanked- at least that's what they told me with my Mitsubishi back in the day. You could also replace one tire if you get it shaved.

On the Evolution X they also have active Yaw control. So in addition to balancing power front to back, it also balanced power from left to right. So with the yaw control, center diff, and everything else going on. it would throw a "service AWD" kind of light if the tires were way off.

Yeah, the EVO's S-AWC was a much different animal than the Ram; the Rams as I recall were technically all wheel drive primarily when it began to detect slippage and then was slightly more rear-biased in the awd system. I always thought of it the same as the G80 locker in the GM trucks/suv's, it slips a bit then grips, but not as harsh as the G80 in engaging.
The EVO's were a mean car, I remember wanting one at the EVO VIII but I was broke so ended up with an Outlander with the 2.4. I worked with Road Race Motorsports in CA and added their strut tower braces, headers, and I was trying to get it tuned but they couldn't make any progress with it. It was a dog.

I regret selling my evo everyday..... i love the Power wagon.. but something about that car just made me feel ultimate happiness.

I worked on that car for almost 8 years. i went through 4 engines!!! ended up fully building, and sleeving the motor. Big turbo, built transmission. The whole 9... God i ******* love that thing.. it made just over 500 to all 4 wheels, on a mustang Dyno and E85.. i feel like crying just talking about it now....
I just loved the sound of that little 4 banger screaming its ass off. After i did the valvetrain i bumped up the rev limiter to 8500RPM... and was NOT shy to take it there.

I lived in CA for a number of years so RRM was only 20-30 minutes from me. They took me for a blast in one of their shop cars and the pull from that little engine was insane!
I recall the EVO's usually tested better than the Subies but for some reason the Evo's weren't as popular. I rarely see any here on the east coast, which is surprising since the most recent are 2015, so there should be plenty of used ones that are affordable.

I honestly didnt care about the engines. i drove that thing like i was in the WRC. i mean ripped the **** out of it everytime i got in it (Traded her in at 65k miles) lol.

I know RRM also. They didnt make as many evos as STI, which is why you see them more... People also tend to get a little more crazy in the Evo Vs STI. so probably a lot more of them got wrecked lol.

you havent lived until you have driven down a freeway at 170Mph in a little 4 banger revving out till 8500 as far as im concerned. Would i do it now? hell no!! but i sure dont regret anything!
