Professional mechanics tell me the transmissions in second generation Ram trucks are crap. Can any Ram fans tell me the likely cause of a 1998 Ram 1500 3-speed automatic transmission not shifting properly? I have to release my foot from the accelerator in order for the auto transmission to shift. If I don't release the accelerator, the tach will red line; not a good situation.

Thank you,
SilentRon

I haven't opened the transmission case, so no, I haven't adjusted the bands. As for setting the TV cable, isn't that what the cable guy does? Sorry, bad joke. Seriously, I'm not familiar with a TV cable on my truck and I'm sure I don't know how to set one. Any guidance you could provide would be most appreciated.

Thanks again,
SilentRon

My first guess would be the governor pressure solenoid (common fail item). However, if you have to go to redline for it to shift chances are the tranny has slipped past being fixable and into the rebuildable stage.
