Since the weather was amazing here in Georgia today, I got out and got to detailing the old Ram today and was looking at the faded plastic bed rails and step on the bumper and started wondering has anyone ever painted theirs body color and if they did, how did it turn out. I tried to search the forum and couldn't find anything so I figured I would start a thread and ask.

Here are a few pics after she was cleaned up.

Try wipe new. It will bring back faded plastic like you wouldn't believe. c7e9067efda70807453df5ff81a139a9.jpg

I've tried a few of these over the years and the basic issue I have with all of them is they leave the surface greasy and oily. That and they tend to steak and run down the paint. Since my Ram in Brilliant Diamond and not a straight black, it is very obvious. That and I have a tendency to run my hand along my truck whenever I walk by it and these products leave a greasy mess on my hand. Wipe New works on house trim and shutters and stuff but I'm not routinely touching my house!!
So does any product out there actually last more than a couple weeks and penetrate the plastic to truly restore the color and and protect?

I've tried a couple of different products and they all are either greasy like you said or they only last a few weeks and the plastic is faded and ashy again ‍♂️

Yep...and most of them will attack all sorts of gunk because after a few days, if they aren't running in the rain (and we have had a ton here), they get kinda gooey/greasy...dust, dirt, gnats, small children..... you name it!

Another option is buy a pair of replacement rails and have a body shop paint them then install.

Cera-kote wipes.

Do some google fu on them. Will restore plastic back to black like no other product.

I have seen some YouTube videos, but after like a year, the plastic was fading again.

That is kinda along the lines of what I was considering. Maybe seeing if I could find a decent set at a junkyard but same idea.

When you remove the side rails, the little tabs tend to want to break off
If they break off, you can try double sided tape, but the rail will work its way up again, especially on the corners

By the way, the reason that Line-X & other brands don't like to do the rail area, is because of all the low & high areas, it would be a real hassle to shoot it all smooth

Did you color match your rails or did you take them off for the liner? If you did get them sprayed, what did it look like and how did it hold up? I'm not super worried about them getting scratched up cuz really the only thing I haul is ass lol.
