Hello im new to the forum. I just bought a 2004 1500 big horn 4wd with 55000 miles on it. I will be using it to tow my race car to and from the track and was wondering what all is out there to up the fuel milage during towing. I used my uncles truck all last year and mine is pretty much the same just a bit nicer so I know the truck has the power to pull my trailer and car with no problem, the truck is all stock right now. what would you guys suggest adding to my the gas bill a bit easier to the check book. cai, exhaust, programmer? im open to all inputs. Thanks, Jason

¾ ton is the best mod. Lol. Unless it has the 5.9 in it. That thing was a beast. I had an 85 power wagon and it had the 360 in it. I had a 12" lift on it and 44" ground hawgs on it. And could go 95mph with ease. Lol.

St-8 what tuner would you suggest? I see alot of people saying the superchips are better for these trucks if you dont plan to upgrade the internals of the engine.

Can't go wrong with superchips unless you plan to do big mods. Gears are a good mod but are $$$$ especially if you are 4x4

Bigger oil cooler, bigger transmission cooler, bigger radiator. Gotta keep your new toy cool. Other things are a good high flow air filter or intake, and what the others have said. But I prefer the Diablo tuners over the superchips. They seem to have more options. Here is a link to their site: DiabloSport Official Website

And Welcome to the forums.

thanks for all the input guys. im trying to read up on this stuff as much as I can but with finals in school coming its being a challenge lol. im not to familiar with tuners yet so this may be a dumb question but does bully dog make one for our trucks? I have a $100 off for one from my past year racing and I was going to try and use it towards one if I could if it would even be worth it. I also have a k and n coupon that I plan to use for a cold air intake.

Both Bullydog and K&N make parts for your truck, but you can do better if you are looking for the best performance.

A Diablo tune with Hemifever custom tuning will give you the best gains with Superchips being the 2nd choice if you prefer to stay with regular canned tuning.

As for intakes, The Vararam will perform the best with S&B being my 2nd choice. K&N will sound cool, but isn't going to show much of a gain as far as performance goes.

If you have 3.55's, then you may want to look into some new gears as well to help with the towing. If you have 3.92's, then keep them. That is a good all around gear ratio for play, towing, and daily driving.

Thanks hemi450hp I have some down time today so I plan to look up all these products. I read a thread yesterday about the vararam may not be the best for gravel roads, so I will look into the s&b since it is said to be better in these conditions since this truck with be in many dirt pits at the race tracks and see a few gravel roads.

The S&B is great. It sounds great and gives you the option to install a plug or filter wrap for off road and dusty conditions. Matt at Moe's Performance has the best pricing on the S&B as well as all other performance mods for these trucks.

Shorty headers IMO would be the best gains for towing mileage, had a set on my ram and gained 2mpg while towing after the shorty headers where installed

You are correct. The Vararam makes the most power because it pulls air from the front bumper and forces it into the motor...this is not ideal for guys that are offroad often or in very dusty conditions. The S&B would be perfect for your application.
